February 13, 2023 | Women's Tennis
SEATTLE, Wash. — The fifth-ranked University of Georgia women's tennis team fell 4-0 to second-ranked North Carolina Monday in the finals of the 2023 ITA National Team Indoor Championship.
The Tar Heels (14-0) won their fourth-straight indoor title in their ninth consecutive trip to the championship match. In fact, the last time UNC lost here was in 2019 to Georgia. The Bulldogs were making their ninth finals appearance at the ITA Indoors, winning titles in 1994, 1995, 2002 and 2019.
On Monday, the Bulldogs (5-3) were edged for the doubles point that came down to a tiebreaker in the No. 1 match. The duo of Elizabeth Scotty and Reese Brantmeier clinched the point with a 7-6(6) win over the sophomore tandem of Guillermina Grant and Mai Nirundorn. Georgia picked up an impressive win at No. 2 as graduate Meg Kowalski and sophomore Mell Reasco upset the nation's top-ranked tandem of Fiona Crawley and Carson Tanguilig 6-4. At No. 3, UNC's Abbey Forbes and Reilly Tran beat Ania Hertel and Anastasiia Lopata 6-4.
In singles, No. 18 Yarlagadda defeated Meg Kowalski at No. 5 in straight sets for a 2-0 lead. Ninth-ranked Tanguilig beat No. 39 Reaso 7-5,6-0 in the No. 3 match for a 3-0 advantage. Then at No. 4, 12th-ranked Forbes defeated Hertel 6-4,6-1 to clinch the match. The remaining three singles matches were halted including the No. 2 contest that was in the third set between No. 40 Dasha Vidmanova (UGA) and Brantmeier. At No. 6, Grant was the lone Bulldog to claim a first set as she was up 6-4, 3-all to No. 63 Tran. The 11th-ranked Ma was battling top-ranked Crawley in the feature match, and the first set had just finished with Crawley taking it in a tiebreaker.
Georgia's road to the final included wins over No. 6 Stanford, No. 15 Oklahoma and No. 14 Iowa State. The Bulldogs will return to action Sunday, Feb. 19 when it plays host to Georgia Tech at 1 p.m.
