Fischer Garners AVCA Second Team All-America

ATHENS, Ga. – University of Georgia senior middle blocker Sophie Fischer has been named a Second Team All-American by the American Volleyball Coaches Association, it was announced Wednesday.
"Sophie is a rare combination of skill, athleticism, character, and desire all coming together into one of college volleyball's best athletes," head volleyball coach Tom Black said. "She will only continue to grow because that's how she's wired. We are so proud of Sophie and excited for everything she brings to our program and university."
Fischer becomes the fifth Georgia Bulldog to be named AVCA All-America, earning Georgia's seventh All-America recognition. She joins Priscilla Pacheco (1993, 1994), Nikki Nicholson (1993, 1994), Alexandra Oquendo (2004), and Kacie Evans (2022).
Nationally, Fischer ranked 11th in points per set as the nation's highest scoring middle, registering 5.26 points per set (594 total points). She ranked 30th in kills per set (4.13 kills/set) and 24th in blocks per set (1.32 blocks/set).
The SEC Player of the Year finished the season as the league's top scorer. She finished top 10 in the SEC in kills per set, service aces per set (0.40 aces/set), blocks per set, and hitting percentage (.324 average).
In just two season in Athens, Fischer's resume includes 2023 AVCA Second Team All-America, 2023 SEC Player of the Year, 2022 AVCA All-America honorable mention, two-time All-SEC, and two-time AVCA All-Southeast Region.
Fischer transferred to Georgia prior to the 2022 season from Kentucky. She will play her COVID season in 2024 in Athens.
Georgia concluded the 2023 season in the opening round of the NCAA Tournament in Provo, Utah on Dec. 1 with a 19-12 record. This was the second-straight appearance in the NCAA Tournament for the Bulldogs, the first time UGA has made back-to-back appearances since 1994 and 1995.
