Georgia Women Sweep Ranked NC State, Duke; Men Split

RALEIGH, N.C. – Highlighted by a sweep of No. 4 NC State and No. 15 Duke by the women's squad, the No. 9/13 University of Georgia swimming and diving teams earned three victories in a tri-meet against the Wolfpack and Blue Devils Friday evening at the Willis R. Carey Aquatic Center.

Led by the freestyle group, the Georgia women (5-1) continued the outstanding start to their season with a sweep of ranked ACC contenders. Junior Duné Coetzee earned a pair of wins, taking the 1,000-yard freestyle with a time of 9:42.19 in a top-three sweep with fellow juniors Abby McCulloh (9:43.71) and Rachel Stege (9:47.15). Coetzee later prevailed in the 200y freestyle with a time of 1:47.20. In the 500y freestyle, Stege celebrated her return from the Pan American Games with a winning time of 4:44.86, leading a top-four sweep that included Coetzee, McCulloh, and fifth-year Jillian Barczyk.
 
In the 100y freestyle, freshman Helena Jones prevailed with a personal-best B-cut time of 49.00. Jones also took second in the 50y freestyle with a time of 22.86 and led off the Bulldogs' winning 400y freestyle relay, joining teammates Sloane Reinstein, Coetzee, and Briana Roberson for a top time of 3:17.96. Fifth-year senior Zoie Hartman earned the win in the 200y IM with a season-best B-cut of 1:57.79, along with posting B-cut times in both breaststroke events.
 
At the diving well, senior Meghan Wenzel placed third on 1-meter with a season-best score of 298.20, followed by another third-place mark of 292.60 on 3-meter.

The Georgia men (2-4) posted nine individual wins in the meet, narrowly missing out on a sweep of their own. Senior Jake Magahey turned in another impressive performance, winning the 500y freestyle with a season-best time of 4:15.07, the second-fastest time nationally this season. Sophomore Sam Powe (4:19.92) and fifth-year Ian Grum (4:21.94) also earned B-cuts in the event. Later, Magahey touched first in the 200y butterfly with a PB of 1:43.88, the sixth-fastest time nationally. Grum placed second with a season-best B-cut of 1:44.50.
 
Grum, also returning from Pan Ams in Chile, posted another season best in the 200y backstroke with a B-cut of 1:40.27, the fourth-fastest time nationally. Powe picked up another B-cut with his second-place time of 1:41.40. Junior Reese Branzell also made a statement in the 100y freestyle with a season-best B-cut of 42.55, moving him into third nationally in the event. Branzell also notched a B-cut in the 50y freestyle, along with graduate teammates Dillon Downing and Miles Simon. In the 200y freestyle, freshman Tomas Koski was victorious for the third-consecutive meet with a PB of 1:33.71.
 
In the 100y backstroke, sophomore Ruard van Renen led a top-three sweep with a B-cut of 45.19, the fifth-fastest time in program history. Senior Connor Haigh set a season best with his winning time of 1:58.23 in the 200y breaststroke, while fifth-year Zach Hils won the 200y IM with a B-cut of 1:44.85. At the well, freshman Matthew Bray continued to shine as he secured his first collegiate victory on 1-meter with a score of 346.75, preceded by a score of 366.85 on 3-meter. Junior Rhett Hopkins followed behind with a season-best mark of 338.05.

Georgia and NC State continue their two-day meet with a long-course meters competition on Saturday at 10 a.m. The meet will not be streamed, but live results will be available to paid subscribers on the MeetMobile app.
