November 21, 2023 | Soccer

ATHENS, Ga. – Four members of the University of Georgia soccer team were named to the 2023 Academic All-District Women's Soccer Team, as announced Tuesday afternoon by College Sports Communications, the organization formerly known as CoSIDA.

Redshirt senior midfielder Nicole Vernis, senior defender Madison Haugen, junior defender Jessie Dunn, and sophomore defender Cate Hardin were recognized for their successes this season on the field and in the classroom. Georgia's four honorees matches the previous program highs set in 2011 and 2022. Georgia has now earned 20 Academic All-District accolades in its program history, including two for Haugen, who was also named a Third Team Academic All-American last season.

Vernis, a Psychology major from North Palm Beach, Florida, carries a 3.69 GPA and led the team in points, assists, shots, and tied for the team lead in goals. She also became the first Georgia player in 12 seasons to make three penalty kicks in a season and was only the eighth player to post a point in five consecutive matches. In Georgia's run to the SEC Tournament title, she assisted on winning goals by Mallie McKenzie in the quarterfinals against Kentucky and Croix Bethune in the semifinals against Texas A&M. Vernis has been named to the SEC Academic Honor Roll in each of her first four seasons and has been to the J. Reid Parker Director of Athletics Honor Roll. She also serves as a team representative on the UGA Student-Athlete Advisory Committee.

Haugen, a Risk Management & Insurance major from Cumming, carries a 3.95 GPA and finished third among field players with 1,803 minutes played. During the year, she scored two goals and assisted on two others, while tallying 24 shots with 13 on frame. Her most important assist of the season came on Hannah White's go-ahead goal against Texas A&M in the SEC Tournament semifinals. In addition to her previous CSC honors, she has been named to the SEC Academic Honor Roll in all three seasons and has earned multiple Presidential Scholars honors for a 4.0 GPA. She also serves as a team representative on the UGA Student-Athlete Advisory Committee.

Dunn, a Biology major from Charlotte, North Carolina, carries a 3.61 GPA and led all field players in minutes with 2,021, playing 90+ in 28 of her last 32 matches. She also leads the team in consecutive starts with 31 straight at center back. Under her watch, the Bulldog backline only allowed 24 goals on the season, tallied eight shutouts, and held opponents to a .105 shooting percentage. She has been named to the SEC Academic Honor Roll in her first two seasons and is a member of the Georgia Way L.E.A.D. Leadership Academy.

Hardin, a Sport Management major from Marietta, carries a 3.61 GPA and ranked second among field players with 1,943 minutes. In Sunday's NCAA Tournament match at Clemson, she set up Bethune for the go-ahead goal with six minutes to play in regulation. During the season, she attempted eight shots with two on frame, while helping Dunn anchor the team's backline. She was named to the SEC Academic Honor Roll in her freshman season and was also named to the Dean's List and J. Reid Parker Director of Athletics Honor Roll.

The four All-District honorees will be considered by a select CSC committee for inclusion on the Academic All-America ballot. The Academic All-America team will be named on Wednesday, Dec. 20 at noon EST. Georgia has placed seven student-athletes on the All-America Team in its program history.
