Perez Peña Wins First Consolation Match in San Diego

SAN DIEGO — Miguel Perez Peña of the Georgia men's tennis team won his round of 16 consolation match at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association National Fall Championships on Thursday afternoon at the Barnes Tennis Center.
 
Perez Peña played his second match of the event against Mathis Bondaz of VCU, winning by a dominant 6-1, 6-1 result. Perez Peña advances to the consolation quarterfinals, where he will take on the winner of the match between Pau Fanlo from Middle Tennessee State and Leo Raquin of Memphis tomorrow.
 
The junior moved into the consolation draw after falling to Michigan State's No. 25 Ozan Baris, the No. 5-8 seed in the field, by a 6-1, 6-4 score. Perez Peña now stands with a 12-3 record on the season.
 
Perez Peña earned a spot in the event after winning the ITA Southeast Regional Championships with a straight set win against 12th-seeded Alvin Tudorica (USF) by a 7-6(5), 6-1 score on Oct. 16. His tournament championship marked the sixth time since 2013 a Bulldog has won the Southeast Regional singles title.
