GOLF, Ill. — The No. 25-ranked Georgia women's golf team fired a 2-under 285 in Tuesday's final round of the Windy City Collegiate Classic. The Bulldogs wrapped up the 54-hole event at Glen View Club in eighth place at 14-under 850 in a field that included four top-10 and nine top-25 teams.
"It was a solid tournament from everybody," head coach Josh Brewer said. "I feel like this field was at a national championship level and you have to be extremely sharp to win. At the same time, we found ourselves in contention most of the event."
Junior Kate Song led the Bulldogs on Tuesday by shooting 2-under 70. The Bulldogs also counted matching 1-under 71s from Caterina Don and Napat Lertsadwattana and a 73 from LoraLie Cowart. Isabella Holpfer's 74 was Georgia's drop score.
Overall, Don led the Bulldogs by tying for eighth at 7-under 209, four strokes off the pace of medalist Lauryn Nguyen of Northwestern. Don, a fifth-year senior from Pinerolo, Italy, posted her second top-10 finish in as many events this fall. The opened the season by finishing ninth at the Cougar Classic. Don is now a combined 15-under over six rounds this fall and has shot par-or-better in each of those loops.
In addition, Song tied for 27th at 2-under 213, Cowart tied for 37th at 1-under 215, Lertsadwattana tied for 49th at 218 and Holpfer tied for 67th at 223.
Of Georgia's 15 individual rounds over two days, 10 were par-or-better scores.
"You like to say you have depth and you to think you have depth, but until tournaments start you can't prove that," Brewer said. "I think we're showing that we have it throughout the lineup. In two tournaments, we've had seven individuals play. Six of the seven have had rounds of par-or-better and all seven of them have a round of 1-over or better."
No. 17 UCLA captured the team title by posting a 32-under 832 effort, nine strokes clear of the field. Tournament host Northwestern was runner-up at 841, followed by No.6 Oregon at 842, followed by No. 2 Wake Forest, No. 14 Texas and Duke all at 843, Arizona at 846, the Bulldogs at 850, No. 4 Southern California at 860 and No. 18 Arizona State and No. 7 Auburn both at 864.
The Bulldogs will return to Chicago area next week to compete in the Illini Invitational at Medinah Country Club on Monday and Tuesday. Last season, Jenny Bae fired a school-record 16-under tally en route to capturing medalist honors and leading the Bulldogs to the best 54-hole tournament team score in program history – 24-under.
