October 22, 2023 | Soccer
COLUMBIA, S.C. — The University of Georgia soccer team closed out its regular season road slate with a 4-0 loss to No. 17 South Carolina Sunday afternoon before 3,775 spectators at Eugene E. Stone III Stadium.
Graduate midfielder Croix Bethune led Georgia (8-4-4, 4-3-2 SEC) with three shots, with South Carolina (11-1-5, 5-0-4 SEC) outshooting Georgia by a 9-6 margin. Sophomore goalkeeper Jordan Brown tallied one save in a full 90 minutes.
South Carolina struck fast, scoring in the fourth minute as Gracie Falla headed in a corner kick from Megan Spiehs for the first goal of the afternoon. Just over 10 minutes later, the Gamecocks extended their advantage as Brianna Behm snuck a shot past defender Jessie Dunn and Brown, with the assist coming from Catherine Barry. The first half was quiet for the Bulldogs, with redshirt senior midfielder Nicole Vernis tallying their lone shot in the 14th minute.
In the second half, South Carolina added to its lead in the 50th minute when Lily Render's shot was deflected by senior defender Madison Haugen into the net. Two minutes later, Haugen would register Georgia's first shot on goal of the day, stopped by a leaping save from Carolina keeper Heather Hinz. Later in the half, Bethune and graduate forward Hannah White each had terrific looks, but were both turned away from Hinz. Despite the Bulldogs' charge, the Gamecocks finished off the scoring when Barry put away a Rylee Forster assist in the 73rd minute.
The Bulldogs close out the regular season against Auburn on Thursday, Oct. 26 at the Turner Soccer Complex. Kickoff is set for 6 p.m. and the match will stream live on SEC Network+.
