Vecic Completes Comeback, Advances to Florence 25K Quarterfinals
October 13, 2023 | Women's Tennis
Florence, S.C. — After trailing in the match by one set, sophomore Alexandra Vecic completed a come-from-behind effort to win her second-round match and advance to the ITF Florence 25K quarterfinals.
Coming off a first-round victory over Layne Sleeth in the first round on Wednesday, Vecic returned to action and faced off against Gabriela Lee on Thursday.
The Singen, Germany native played to a steady pace in the early going of the match as she kept the first set within striking distance. The set remained level into the late stages before stalling at 5-5. Despite a late push, the set leaned opposite as Vecic fell 7-5. Trailing by a set for the first time in the tournament, Vecic responded immediately with a strong start to lead 4-1 in the second set. Both players exchanged points, but Vecic finished off the set to level the match at 1-1. With all momentum on her side, Vecic cruised early in the third set and capped off the night with back-to-back sets victories to complete the comeback and win the match 5-7, 6-3, 6-3.
Vecic now improves to a 6-3 singles record on the season and will return to action when she faces off against Whitney Osuigwe in the Florence 25K quarterfinals on Friday.
