Georgia Concludes Successful Day Two of Miami Spring Invite

January 07, 2023 | Men's Tennis

CORAL GABLES, Fla. – The University of Georgia men's tennis team concluded day two of the Miami Spring Invite in successful fashion, earning five singles wins and a pair in doubles competition.

In singles, No. 1 Ethan Quinn, No. 106 Trent Bryde, Miguel Perez Peña, Thomas Paulsell and Filipe Costa all earned victories in their matches, while No. 55 Blake Croyder and Britton Johnston as well as Paulsell and Perez Peña picked up the two wins in doubles.

Georgia's final day of play tomorrow will begin in singles against Texas at 8 a.m. ET and conclude in doubles versus South Carolina at noon.

"Very happy with the uptick in intensity and assertiveness from our guys, but we are still not as sharp as we want to be," said head coach Manny Diaz. "Ethan looked great in singles and we've had solid play from Trent and the younger guys like Miguel and Thomas. Our intensity in doubles was much better today but we still didn't get some of the results we want. Our guys are hungry, and we look forward to our last day here tomorrow, mostly against a good Texas team."

The Bulldogs opened day two in singles against the Gamecocks and went 3-3 for the second consecutive day, with No. 1 Quinn, No. 106 Bryde and Perez Peña recording wins.

Top-ranked Quinn bounced back after dropping his first collegiate match by becoming the first player on the team to reach double-digit wins in singles this season. The redshirt freshman defeated James Story in straight sets by a 6-4, 6-2 mark to improve to 10-1 on the year.

Both No. 106 Bryde and Perez Peña improved to 2-0 in the Miami Spring Invite with their wins Saturday morning. Bryde, a senior, picked up his fifth win in his previous six matches and did so against a ranked opponent, No. 56 Casey Hoole, in a 6-3, 7-5 decision. Perez Peña notches his eighth win of the year against Lucas da Silva in dominant fashion, winning the match by a 6-3, 6-0 score.

Georgia then shifted into doubles where it faced off against competition from host Miami, also splitting results.

The senior tandem of No. 55 Croyder and Johnston were able to pull out a win against Jackson Armistead and Nacho Serra Sanchez by an 8-5 score to improve to 6-2 on the year. Paulsell and Perez Peña improved to 2-0 together at the event with their 8-5 defeat of Leo Bierbaum and Martin Katz.

The Red and Black closed the day again in singles. Costa, Johnston and Paulsell represented Georgia in the afternoon slate. Paulsell, a sophomore, picked up his seventh win of the fall slate with a win over Martin Vergara Del Puerto by a 6-4, 6-1 result. Redshirt freshman Costa closed out the day for Georgia by notching his second win of the season with a victory over Jackson Armistead, 7-6(3), 7-5.
