January 31, 2023 | Men's Swimming & Diving, Women's Swimming & Diving
ATHENS, Ga. – Following a Senior Day sweep of Emory last Saturday, four members of the University of Georgia men's and women's swimming and diving team received Southeastern Conference weekly honors, as announced by the league office in Birmingham Tuesday afternoon.
Senior Bradley Dunham and sophomore Duné Coetzee were both named SEC Swimmer of the Week, while freshmen Sam Powe and Elizabeth Isakson each earned SEC Freshman of the Week honors. Georgia finishes the dual season with eight SEC weekly honors, featuring five Swimmer of the Week honorees (Dunham, Coetzee, Ian Grum, Zoie Hartman, and Abby McCulloh). For Coetzee, this is her second career SEC plaudit, following a Freshman of the Week award in October 2021, while this is the first weekly honor for the other three Bulldogs.
Dunham, who shared SEC honors with Missouri's Jack Dahlgren, marked his Senior Day in style with four wins last Saturday in a 175-94 victory over DIII No. 1 Emory. The Hoschton native prevailed in both the 200 freestyle (1:34.18) and 100 butterfly (47.08), picking up B-cuts and personal-best times in both events to give him five provisional cuts this season. Earlier in the meet, he led off the Bulldogs' victorious 200 medley relay with an opening 50 backstroke split of 22.18. He then closed the meet with a winning 200 freestyle relay with a split of 19.34, the fastest of Georgia's four swimmers on the team.
Coetzee made an impressive mark in the Georgia women's 172-105 win over the Eagles. In her first-ever collegiate 1,650 freestyle race, Coetzee posted a B-cut time of 16:03.09, the fifth-fastest time in the nation this season. In addition to her mile time, Coetzee turned in a 1,000 freestyle split of 9:41.07, making her the 10th-fastest performer in program history in the event. In the meet, Coetzee also competed in the 100 butterfly and 200 freestyle relay.
Powe, who shared honors with Kentucky's Ryan Merani, earned his first collegiate on Saturday, finishing first in the 200 IM with a time of 1:47.06, while also placing second in the 200 backstroke with a time of 1:45.00. In the 200 medley relay, Powe led off with a 50 backstroke split of 22.66, helping his team place third in the event. In the 200 freestyle relay, he anchored Georgia's 'B' team with a split of 20.00, the fastest final leg of all swimmers.
Isakson closed out the dual season with three wins. Isakson opened the meet by swimming the breaststroke leg of the Bulldogs' winning 200 medley relay, dropping a split of 28.25. In the 100 breaststroke, she finished first with a time of 1:02.38, followed by a winning time of 2:16.72 in the 200 breaststroke, taking the event by nearly five seconds.
The Georgia swimming and diving teams return to action in two week at the SEC Swimming & Diving Championships, running Tuesday, Feb. 14 through Saturday, Feb. 18 at Texas A&M's Student Recreation Center.
