ATHENS – The University of Georgia women's basketball team returned home to Stegeman Coliseum on Thursday evening and defeated the Missouri Tigers, 62-51.
Alisha Lewis paced the Lady Bulldogs in scoring with a season-high 18 points, cashing in four triples to tie her season record from behind the arc. Jordan Isaacs tied her career high in rebounds and led Georgia with nine boards. Chloe Chapman tallied a team-leading six steals.
"I saw just how resilient they are," Georgia head coach Katie Abrahamson-Henderson said. "I wrote on the board what it means to be a Georgia Bulldog, and it's toughness. It's fight. It's about being fierce. It means being a great teammate and working together. It's all about energy. I wrote that on the board and said, "That's all I want to see tonight. All the pretty stuff doesn't matter. Those things I wrote down are going to matter in this game." I think as a group they really honed in on that. A few people didn't get to play as much because they were just such a three-point centric team that we had to play small ball a little bit more tonight."
Missouri (14-7, 3-5 SEC) jumped out with an early 5-0 lead before Georgia (14-8, 3-5 SEC) knotted the score at 10-10. Five points from the Lady Bulldogs and a strong defensive effort kept the score tied, 15-15, to close the first quarter.
Lewis opened the second quarter of play with a triple to spark a 10-2 run for Georgia. The Lady Bulldogs forced six Tigers turnovers to take a nine-point advantage, 29-20, into the locker room at the half.
Five points from Audrey Warren fueled a 9-2 run for the Lady Bulldogs to open the second half. A six-point run from the Tigers closed the gap to eight, but Missouri was unable to take the lead as Georgia carried a 13-point lead, 46-33, into the final frame.
Seven points from the Tigers late in the fourth quarter put Missouri within five with less than one minute remaining. Three sets of Lewis free throws gave Georgia a 62-51 advantage to close the game.
