Bulldogs Conclude Duel in the Desert
January 15, 2023 | Women's Tennis
Indian Wells, Calif. — The University of Georgia women's tennis picked up six wins – four singles and two doubles – over the Texas Tech Red Raiders on the final of the Duel in the Desert. In total, the Bulldogs won 24 matches – 17 singles and seven doubles – over the three-day event.
"We capped off a very strong weekend well today," said Georgia associate head coach Drake Bernstein. "Our doubles was certainly one of the highlights of the weekend. We made it a point of emphasis at the beginning of the trip to do some of the small things that determine the outcome of doubles matches and it was terrific to see that work pay off."
"Really, across the board we had strong singles showings as well," said Bernstein. "We wanted to make it a point to be gritty, tough and competitive in every match we played and we definitely accomplished that this weekend."
In singles, Georgia picked up four wins on the day. Senior Ania Hertel and sophomores Mai Nirundorn and Dasha Vidmanova won in straight sets, while freshman Anastasiia Lopata went the distance. After dropping the opening set, Lopata came back to defeat Cristina Tiglea 3-6, 6-4, 1-0 (10-8) in a super tiebreaker. Hertel cruised to a 6-3, 6-3 win over Olivia Peet, while No. 31 Vidmanova dominated Avelina Sayfetdinova 6-1, 6-1. Nirundorn rounded out the day, topping Yekaterina Dmitrichenko 6-3, 6-2.
In doubles action, the Bulldogs picked up two wins. Sophomores Nirundorn and Grant defeated Kansas' Malkia Ngounoue and Maria Titova 6-4, while Kowalski and Reasco defeated Avelina Sayfetdinova and Metka Komac (TTU) 6-4.
"We're looking forward to getting back to Athens, getting some rest and gearing up for a big challenge on ITA Kickoff weekend," said Bernstein. "Our team is looking forward to playing in front of the best fans in the country on the best courts in college tennis again."
Georgia will open the spring dual season on Jan. 27-28 when it hosts Notre Dame, Stetson, and USC in the ITA Kick-off Weekend at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex.
