Paulsell, Perez Peña Opens Alabama Four-In-The-Fall With Wins
September 30, 2022 | Men's Tennis
TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – The Georgia Bulldogs men's tennis team completed its first day of competition at the Alabama Four-In-The-Fall on Friday afternoon, highlighted by sophomore Thomas Paulsell's straight-set win against Alabama's Joao Ferreira, 6-4, 6-4.
"I thought in singles overall there was some great tennis played by our two sophomores Thomas and Miguel. Miguel lost a really close first set that could've gone his way and he responded so well in the second set, which is a testament to his toughness and resiliency. We are excited to compete again tomorrow."
The day started in doubles with Britton Johnston and Miguel Perez Peña representing the Red and Black. Despite fighting throughout the match, the tandem fell to Alabama's Ferreira and Zach Foster by a 6-4 result.
In singles, Foster again got the better of the Bulldogs, defeating Johnston by a 6-2, 6-4 score, followed by Paulsell getting his straight-set victory.
Miguel Perez Peña was the last match completed for the Bulldogs on the day, defeating Tulane's fifth year Benji Jacobson in three sets, 76-7(10), 6-1, 1-0 (10-7). The team finished with two wins and two losses on the first day of the tournament.
Georgia will move into the consolation bracket where it will face off against either the Tulane Blue or Louisville Black squads.
The Bulldogs will open with doubles play tomorrow at 12:30 p.m. and then transition into singles starting at 2:30 p.m. For the final day of play on Sunday, doubles will start at 11 a.m. and singles at 12:30 p.m.
To advance in the field, a team will need to win two of their three matches in singles and doubles, meaning one in doubles and singles or two in singles. If a pair wins only one of those three matches in a given round, they will not progress to the next round of the tournament.
The tournament will be played as best of three sets, including a full third set, with no-Ad scoring. Each participating school will have two doubles teams playing in the field, with both acting as one unit throughout.
