FRANKLIN, Tenn. — Jenny Bae fired a 3-under 69 to lead the Georgia women's golf team in the opening round of the Mason Rudolph Championships on Friday. The super senior from Suwanee, Ga., is tied for fourth in the individual field, just a stroke off lead. Georgia carded a 9-over 297 as a team and is tied with LSU and Alabama for ninth on the team leaderboard.
"She's a two-time All-American who wants to play on the LPGA Tour," head coach Josh Brewer said. "If you look at her first four rounds this fall, that's how you get there. She expects to play like this. Quite honestly, I think she'd be more surprised if she didn't play like this. Now, we need her teammates to step up and help her."
Bae signed for her second round in the 60s and third under-par effort in four fall loops to date.
Bae played the back nine at 3-under after turning at even. Bae mixed birdies at No. 4 and No. 8 with bogeys at No. 3 and No. 6 on the front side. She moved into the red with a birdie at No. 12 but returned to par with a bogey at No. 13. Bae closed with an eagle at No. 14 and a birdie at No. 18.
Georgia also counted a 75 from Jo Hua Hung, a 76 from Caroline Craig and a 77 from Caterina Don while dropping Céleste Dao's 78.
Bae, Craig and Dao all wrapped up their rounds with birdies at No. 18.
"That should be us some momentum, but all we really need to do is play like us," Brewer said. "We'll go into tomorrow looking for put up our best round of the fall. We need a round like that to get this fall season headed in the right direction."
Bae is among a trio of golfers tied for fourth, a shot back of Auburn's Megan Schofill, Vanderbilt's Lynn Lim and Arizona's Nena Wongthanavimok. Hung is tied for 39th, Craig is tied for 48th, Don is tied for 57th and Dao is tied for 63rd.
Arizona leads the team field after posting a 6-under 282. That's a shot better than Vanderbilt, the tournament's host. Rounding out the top-10 are Mississippi State at 284, Kentucky at 289, Auburn at 291, Washington at 292, Ohio State at 295, Denver at 296 and the Bulldogs, Crimson Tide and Tigers at 297.
The Bulldogs will be paired with Alabama and Chattanooga for Saturday's round, teeing off in waves between 9:45-10:25 from No. 10. Live scoring is being updated on a three-hole basis at www.golfstat.com.
