22FB Quick Chat - Broderick Jones

Sitting down for a Quick Chat with Georgia left tackle Broderick Jones, you don't expect to wind up discussing old western television shows from the 1950s and '60s. But the great thing about doing Q&As is, you never know where you're going to wind up.

A redshirt sophomore from Lithonia, Ga., the 6-foot-4 and 310-pound Jones has started the Bulldogs' first three games at left tackle. In 2021, he took over as the starter late in the season and earned Freshman All-SEC honors.

During our Chat, Jones talked about being big, moving around a lot, watching westerns with his grandfather, funny teammates, and much more. Here's some of what he had to say:

Frierson: When did you get big? Were you always the tallest kid in your class or was there a massive growth spurt that led to you being as big as you are?

Jones: I was always big but there were always a couple of us, it wasn't just me. But when I got to high school, that's when I was bigger than everybody else.

Frierson: Were you always a lineman?

Jones: I did play some tight end because I was pretty athletic.

Frierson: When you see Darnell Washington, who's 6-7 and 270, do you look at him with a bit of envy because he's out there making plays at tight end?

Jones: Yeah, sometimes, but it's all right. He's my buddy.

Frierson: What's something you could eat every day and never get tired of it?

Jones: Salmon. I like it steamed with a little bit of honey on top, a little seasoning.

Frierson: How are you in the kitchen?

Jones: I can cook.

Frierson: Say you're inviting the rest of the offensive line over for dinner, what will you make them?

Jones: If it's the O-line, I'll probably just grill some burgers and hot dogs. Something simple.

Frierson: When you think of home, what comes to mind?

Jones: Really just how I grew up. I was always moving around as kid, so I never really had a set foundation until eighth grade. From eighth grade to 11th grade, I stayed in the same house, so that was pretty cool.

Frierson: Did going through all that make the transition to college a little bit easier?

Jones: Yeah, I would say that, but I wouldn't say it's because of the moving part. It's just because I knew so many people here already, from Darnell and (Amarius) Mims and other guys on the O-line, because we went to camps together.

Frierson: How small is that world of the top high school players that see each other at different camps?

Jones: You see a lot of the same people at the camps so even if you don't know everybody, you recognize a lot of the faces. You get used to seeing them and going against them.

Frierson: During the recruiting process, are you talking to a lot of the guys about what they're thinking and where they're going?

Jones: No, I really wasn't that type, trying to get people to go somewhere. I was still going through the process myself, so I really wasn't sure where I was going.

Frierson: How often do you look at your national championship ring?

Jones: Not often. It's back at home. I'm trying to get another one. I've only put it on a couple of times, but it's really cool having it.

Frierson: What do you do to get away from school and football?

Jones: Play the game (video games). I'm really a homebody. I just got into playing the game system earlier this year. I was really big on watching TV series just to pass the time, but there's nothing good to watch nowadays.

I'm used to watching old western TV shows with my granddad and stuff.

Frierson: Like "Bonanza"?

Jones: Yeah, "Bonanza" and "The Rifleman" and there was one more.

Frierson: What is that other famous one that was on forever?

Jones: I'm trying to thing. I'm pretty sure we're talking about the same show.

In the morning, when I was getting ready for school, we'd be watching it. We'd sit down and watch it sometimes while I waited on the bus. It was interesting to me; I just like watching a lot of different things, and once it interests me, I'll just keep watching it.

Frierson: "Gunsmoke" is the name of the show.

Jones: "Gunsmoke" it is. That's definitely the show I was thinking about.

Frierson: Who is the funniest guy on the team? I assume Jordan Davis had that title the last few years.

Jones: Yeah, he was a goofball. And he was big, which is what made it even funnier.

Right now, there are a lot of guys. If we're going by class, I'd say Earnest (Greene III) for the freshmen; sophomore, I would give it to Pop, Jamon (Dumas-Johnson); juniors, probably either me or Sedrick Van Pran; and then for senior, I'd say Nolan (Smith), just because he's always talking smack.

It's hard to just give it to one person on the team. That's tough, right there.

Frierson: Are there a lot more goofballs on the team than I might think there are?

Jones: Yes, definitely. I think that's a way of us bonding, just playing around and not trying to be serious all the time.
