Dawgs Dominant in 3-0 Win at Georgia State
September 01, 2022 | Soccer
ATLANTA – With a pair of three-point performances, the University of Georgia soccer team controlled the run of play from wire-to-wire in a 3-0 victory over Georgia State Thursday evening before 299 spectators at the GSU Soccer Complex.
Georgia (3-2-0) dominated possession from the early moments on, finally cashing in with a pair of goals in the 16th minute from sophomore forward Joyelle Washington and junior defender Madison Haugen. Sophomore defender Alyssa Stadeker tacked on another score in the 74th minute for her first career goal.
The Bulldogs' defense was stout throughout the evening, only allowing two shots from Georgia State (2-1-2), the fewest for a Georgia opponent since Binghamton attempted one on Aug. 25, 2019. Sophomore goalkeeper Liz Beardsley tallied one save in earning her third clean sheet of the season.
"(Two goals in a minute) settles the game a bit," Georgia head coach Keidane McAlpine said following the match. "It allows to be on the front foot. It allows us to get going. A 2-0 lead is always a bit fragile; trying to maintain the intensity was the hard part today. It was great to get the game started and start early. We haven't done that enough, so I thought our intensity was really good."
Georgia opened the match on the offensive with graduate forward Dani Murguia and Washington each attempting shots in the first three minutes. In the 16th minute, Washington scored her first goal for Georgia off an assist from Murguia, who was set up by an initial service from Haugen. For Murguia, it was her first assist of the season and 21st for her career, placing her just three away from the program record held by Suzannah Weathersbee.
Just 37 seconds later, Haugen extended the lead with a blistering 25-yard strike over the Panther keeper's head, depositing an assist from junior midfielder Dasia Torbert. The sequence was the sixth-fastest run of consecutive goals in program history and the fastest since Ali Williams scored twice in a 36-second span against Georgia Southern in 2005.
The Bulldogs looked to expand their advantage, eventually finishing the first half with a 14-1 shot margin. As the match headed to the second half, the shots became more sporadic although the intensity remained the same. Finally, in the 74th minute, Stadeker notched her first career score off a cross from Washington, sending the ball into the bottom right corner. For Haugen and Washington, their three-point performances each marked new career highs.
Georgia remains on the road this weekend for a trip to Kennesaw State on Sunday, Sept. 4 at 6 p.m. at Fifth Third Bank Stadium. The match will be streamed live on ESPN+.
