ATHENS, Ga. — Jo Hua Hung, a rising fifth-year member fo the Georgia women's golf team, won the Georgia State Golf Association's Women's Match Play Championship on Wednesday. Hung defeated Katie Song, 1-up, in the championship at Old Toccoa Farm Golf Club.
Hung clinched the title in dramatic fashion. The back-and-forth final in which neither golfer led by more than one hole was all-square through No. 15. Song grabbed a 1-up lead with a birdie at No. 16 before Hung birdied No. 17 to tie the match and posted another red number at No. 18 to secure the championship.
Hung finished fourth in stroke play qualifying on Monday. On Tuesday, she defeated Jirapon Carlson, 5-and-4, in the first round and then dispatched Abigail Bolt, 2-and-1, in the quarterfinals. Hung bested defending champion Chitty Padgett, 2-and-1, in the semifinals on Wednesday morning before besting Song in the championship match.
Georgia golfers have now won the GSGA match play title three times in the last eight years. Rinko Mitsunaga won the event in 2015, and current Bulldog Jenny Bae was the 2020 champion.
Rising junior Isabella Holpfer also was in action this week. She competed in the final qualifier for the field of the AIG Women's British Open on Monday. Holpfer shot 79 and fell short of earning one of six qualifying spots in the field for this week's Major at Muirfield in Scotland.
