Georgia Bests Furman, 1-0, in Preseason Finale
August 13, 2022 | Soccer
ATHENS, Ga. – The University of Georgia soccer team closed out its preseason schedule with a 1-0 victory over Furman Saturday evening at the Turner Soccer Complex.
The Bulldogs finished their exhibition season with two victories, following a 2-1 win over No. 2 Duke Monday evening at Turner.
"We started very well. I thought that the intensity and effort that we came out with to start the game was fantastic," said head coach Keidane McAlpine following the match. "I thought we probably should've capitalized on one or two more in that first fifteen to twenty minutes. After that, it got kind of stale, and we didn't play with the same energy and effort that I was hoping for. However, we got a lot more young kids on the field, some debuts tonight, which were important. There are still some repetitions of things we need to work on which is good. All in all, I'm pleased."
Junior forward Tori Penn's goal in the 24th minute proved to be the lone score of the evening as Georgia controlled possession for most of the match. The goal was initiated by senior midfielder Mallie McKenzie, who saved a ball from going out of bounds before passing to Penn, who connected from just outside the six for the score.
"We had a lot of shots on goal, and I just finally got one on target," said Penn. "It was a Mallie cross, and I just cut it back and shot with my right."
Georgia now turns its attention to the regular season, starting with Thursday's opener against Georgia Southern at 6 p.m. at Turner. The match will be streamed live on SEC Network+. The Bulldogs will then host top-ranked and defending national champion Florida State on Sunday, Aug. 21 at 1 p.m. on ESPNU.
