ATHENS, Ga. — Fifty years ago, a groundbreaking federal legislation opened up a new universe for Georgia athletics. Title IX provided guidelines for women to be afforded equal opportunities as their male counterparts within intercollegiate athletics.

Soon thereafter, a new version of Glory was being brought to Old Georgia as "Lady Bulldogs" etched their names alongside the greatest athletes to ever wear the Red and Black.

Initially funded by a $15,000 grant from the Athletic Association, Liz Murphey quickly supplied a significant return on that investment. Murphey arrived in Athens several years before Title IX and had laid the foundation for Georgia's success by coaching its first nationally recognized women's sports program in golf. Over the next decade, Murphey's role grew into Senior Women's Administrator within the Athletic Association, and she assembled a team of some of the greatest coaches ever in their respective sports. Simultaneously, the University of Georgia blossomed into a beacon of women's athletics could be.

By the time the NCAA began oversight of women's intercollegiate athletics in 1982, Georgia was at the forefront in golf and programs in basketball, gymnastics, swimming & diving, tennis and volleyball all followed suit. In accordance with Title IX, UGA has consistently expanded those opportunities and added cross country, equestrian, soccer, softball and track & field to its ledger of women's athletics programs.

Over the next year, we'll celebrate each and every member of Georgia's rich history of women's athletics and draw a spotlight to some of those who became household names not only as Bulldogs but throughout the sports world in general.
