Fink Wins Two Golds at World Championships; Urlando Places Fifth

BUDAPEST, Hungary – In his fourth career appearance at the FINA World Championships, University of Georgia men's swimming and diving alum Nic Fink earned his first two career gold medals, taking first in the men's 50-meter breaststroke and the mixed 4x100-meter medley relay Tuesday evening at the Duna Arena.
Fink, who already earned bronze in the 100-meter breaststroke on Sunday, posted an American Record time of 26.45, besting Italy's Nicolo Martineghi by three-hundredths of a second. The former Bulldog had previously competed at Worlds in 2013, 2015, and 2017, turning in a previous-best finish of fifth in the 200-meter breaststroke in 2017. At last December's World Short Course Championships, he won gold in the 50-meter and 200-meter breaststroke races, along with a bronze in the 100-meter.
In the mixed 4x100-meter medley relay, Fink swam a 57.86 100-meter breaststroke split on the second leg, helping the United States post a winning time of 3:38.79. The American squad bested second-place Australia by nearly three seconds.
Earlier in Tuesday's finals session, rising junior Luca Urlando concluded his first appearance at Worlds with a fifth-place time of 1:54.92 in the men's 200-meter butterfly final. Urlando improved upon the seventh-place time of 1:55.94 he swam in Monday's semifinal round.
In semifinals action, alums Hali Flickinger and Chase Kalisz advanced to Wednesday finals. Flickinger placed second in the women's 200-meter butterfly with a time of 2:05.90, while Kalisz moved on in the men's 200-meter individual medley with a time of 1:56.76.
