Bulldogs Headed To NCAA Bryan Regional

ATHENS, Ga. --- The Georgia men's golf team will begin its quest for another national championship this week in the NCAA Bryan (Texas) Regional.

Schedule And Format: Georgia and the other squads will have 18 holes of stroke play Monday through Wednesday. The third-seeded Bulldogs will be paired with host Texas A&M and Pepperdine in Monday's first round, with tee times set for 8:30-9:15 a.m. 

Field: Georgia, No. 1 seed Pepperdine, No. 2 Texas A&M, No. 4 Tennessee, No. 5 Kansas, No. 6 Arizona, No. 7 Michigan State, No. 8 SMU, No. 9 Boise State, No. 10 Oregon State, No. 11 Colorado State, No. 12 Southeast Louisiana, and No. 13 Texas Southern.

Course: Traditions Golf Club (par 72, 7,146 yards)

Lineup: Senior Trent Phillips, juniors Nicolas Cassidy and Ben van Wyk, and freshmen Buck Brumlow and Maxwell Ford. 

What's At Stake: Following 54 holes, the top five teams from each Regional will advance to the 30-team field for the NCAA Championships in Scottsdale, Ariz., May 27-June 1. The other Regionals are being held at OSU Golf Club's Scarlet Course in Columbus, Ohio; Yale Golf Course in New Haven, Conn.; PGA National Resort's Champions Course in Palm Beach Gardens, Fla.; The Reserve at Spanos Park in Stockton, Calif.; and Jimmie Austin Golf Club in Norman, Okla.

Rankings: No. 12 Bushnell Golfweek Coaches, No. 12 Golfweek/Sagarin, No. 13 Golfstat.

Last Time: The Bulldogs came in fifth in the stroke play portion of the Southeastern Conference Championship. Phillips placed fifth individually and Ford was 18th.

Rich NCAA History: The Bulldogs were invited to a Regional for the 26th straight year and for the 32nd time in 33 seasons (missing in 1995 and excluding 2020 as the postseason was canceled) since the format was introduced in 1988-89. The Bulldogs have advanced from the Regional to the NCAAs 23 times. The Bulldogs are appearing in their 25th Regional under Coach Chris Haack and they have moved onto the NCAAs 20 times. Haack led the Bulldogs to the 1999 and 2005 national titles, to runner-up finishes in 2007 and 2011, and to the national semifinals in 2015.

Coach Chris Haack Says: "We are definitely looking forward to playing in the Bryan Regional. The field is a strong one, and we will have to be at our best to be one of the teams to advance. As usual, there is no margin for error at this time of the season. We have prepped with energy and intensity and we're coming in focused. We are dialed in on our task at hand."

News And Notes: Phillips was named First-Team All-SEC and Ford was selected for the league's All-Freshman Team. Phillips became the first player in school history to garner First-Team honors all four seasons. He also joined Harris English, Russell Henley, and Brendon Todd as the only Bulldogs to be named All-SEC four times. … Junior Connor Creasy was named to the SEC's Community Service Team. … Cassidy served this year on Georgia's Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Committee, while senior Will Kahlstorf and Creasy were on the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee. … van Wyk's last name is pronounced fun-vake. … Ford represented the Bulldogs in the Patriot All-America, wherein the players carry a bag that includes the name and branch of service of a fallen or severely wounded soldier. … Phillips is rated No. 5 in the Velocity Global Ranking, No. 10 by Golfweek/Sagarin, and No. 11 in the World Amateur Golf Rankings. … Phillips has appeared in 39 of 39 collegiate tournaments. Henley, Kevin Kisner, and Brian Harman are the only Bulldogs under Haack to never miss a tournament.
