Aggies Evade Sweep in Sunday’s Finale, 16-8

March 27, 2022 | Softball

ATHENS, Ga. – The 17th-ranked Georgia Bulldogs couldn't complete a series sweep over the Texas A&M Aggies Sunday, falling six innings, 16-8.

After the Aggies put up six runs in the first, Georgia eventually cut the lead to two at 10-8, but a six-run sixth broke the game open for the Aggies to avoid a Bulldog sweep.

Georgia is now 29-5 on the season and 4-2 in SEC play.

Sophomore Aniyah Black paced Georgia's offense with two hits and three RBI. Senior Lacey Fincher also had two hits in the game. Georgia scattered eight hits.

Sophomore Madison Kerpics (11-2) suffered the loss in the circle. She allowed nine total runs in one combined inning. In all, four Georgia pitchers were used in the game.

The Aggies (19-12, 2-7) struck early and in a big way. A pair of bases-loaded walks and a grand slam put Texas A&M ahead 6-0 with only one out recorded in the opening frame. Senior RHP Lauren Mathis entered after the grand slam to get the Bulldogs out of the inning.

Georgia wasted no time to start chipping away at the Aggie first inning lead. Savana Sikes led off the bottom of the inning with a double to left center. Jaiden Fields followed with a single. On the play, the throw was cut, and Fields was out at second but heads up base running allowed Sikes to score and put Georgia on the board. Georgia then loaded the bases for Black who looked at ball four to drive in the second run of the inning, narrowing the lead to 6-2.

Texas A&M got the two runs back with a two-out, two-run home run in the top of the second to go back ahead six, 8-2.

Georgia plated four runs in the bottom of the third to slice the lead to two. Following back-to-back walks to start the innings, Sydney Kuma drove an RBI base hit to right center to plate Lacey Fincher. Black continued her strong day, doubling to left center and driving in both runners. Two batters later, a fly ball to left from Sikes allowed Black to tag and was safe at home on a great slide, bringing the score to 8-6 after three.

A one-out RBI single through the right side in the top of the fourth added one to the Aggie lead, 9-6. TAMU once again used an RBI single through the right side, this time in the fifth, to make it 10-6.

With two on and two out in the bottom of the inning, Sara Mosley provided a two-run double off the wall in right to once again cut the Aggie lead to two, 10-8.

A six-run sixth for the Aggies broke the game open, going up on Georgia 16-8. Texas A&M held Georgia in the bottom of the sixth to secure the run-rule victory.

Georgia will host Georgia Southern at Jack Turner Stadium Wednesday evening. First pitch between the Bulldogs and Eagles is set for 6 p.m.

Head Coach Tony Baldwin
On today's performance…
"It was a disappointing performance, really on all phases of the game. There were some good things, some bright spots. I thought Aniyah Black had a good game. I thought we put together some good at-bats. We got ourselves back in it. I think we had the bases loaded there at 10-8 and had a chance to maybe tie the game up, so that is a credit to our team and their resilience to put ourselves in that position in a game where we didn't play very well. We still had a chance there late in the game, but hat last inning just got away from us. The only thing I can say is, 'l like our team'.  Overall, it was a good weekend. It was disappointing the way that this one finished, but hats off to Texas A&M. We will get back to work on Tuesday and be ready for Georgia Southern on Wednesday."
