HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C. — The Georgia women's golf team posted its second consecutive 298 in Wednesday's final round of the Darius Rucker Intercollegiate, putting the Bulldogs in 13th place at 890.
The elite tournament featured four top-10 and 10 top-25 teams among the 17 competing schools at Long Cove Club.
Freshman LoraLie Cowart led Georgia with a 1-over 72 on Wednesday. The Bulldogs also counted a 74 from Caterina Don, a 75 from Jo Hua Hung and a 77 from Candice Mahé. Georgia dropped Jenny Bae's 79, and Isabella Holpfer, competing individually, signed for a 73.
Overall, Hung was the Bulldogs' top individual, tying for 27th at 220. In addition, Holpfer tied for 41st at 223, Don tied for 46th at 224, Cowart tied for 53rd at 226, Mahé tied for 65th at 228 and Bae tied for 68th at 229.
"LoraLie did exactly what we want everyone to do; she battled all day trying to the best score she could at the end of the day," head coach Josh Brewer said. "Jo was steady for us all week. The score looks farther away than we think it is. We know we have some things to clean up and work on. We'll get to work on those and be ready to get back out there in a couple of weeks."
Cowart struggled early, covering her first seven holes at 4-over, but fought back to regain one stroke with a birdie and No. 18. She then played the front side at 2-under with birdies at No. 3 and No. 5.
No. 5 Wake Forest claimed the team title after shooting 9-over 861, nine strokes better than South Carolina, the tournament host and runner-up. The Demon Deacons' Carolina Lopez-Chacarra earned medalist honors after shooting 4-under 209, two shots better than the field.
Georgia will return to action next weekend when the Bulldogs venture to where they hope their season ends, Arizona. Georgia compete in the Clover Cup on March 11-13 at Longbow Golf Club in Mesa, Arizona. The NCAA Championships will be held May 20-25 at Grayhawk Golf Club in Scottsdale, Ariz.
