HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C. — The Georgia women's golf team posted a 10-over 294 in Monday's opening round of the Darius Rucker Intercollegiate. The Bulldogs are in seventh place in a stacked field which includes four top-10 and 10 top-25 teams competing at Long Cove Club.
Jenny Bae led Georgia on Monday with a 1-over 72. She turned at 1-under after notching birdies at No. 2 and No. 7, as well as a bogey at No. 3. Bae moved to 2-under with another birdie at No. 10 but immediately gave that stroke back at No. 11. A double-bogey at No. 14 pushed her over par for the first time on the day, where she finished following a birdie at No. 15 and a bogey at No. 17.
Following Bae, the Bulldogs counted a trio of 74s from LoraLie Cowart, Caterina Don and Jo Hua Hung. Isabella Holpfer, who is competing as an individual, fired a 75, while Candice Mahé posted a 78.
"Jenny played a really solid round of golf," head coach Josh Brewer said. "Really, everyone played solid today. I was pleased. We had a game plan, and we stuck to it and executed. Physically, you are going to make some errors now and then. That's a given. Mentally, I thought we were pretty much spot on and made good decisions all day. We've put ourselves in a good position and with a good round tomorrow, Wednesday could be a special day for us."
Overall, Bae is tied for 12th, three strokes off the pace of Furman's Anna Morgan. Cowart, Don and Hung are tied for 37th, Holpfer is tied for 47th and Mahé is tied for 69th.
Interestingly, the first six teams to hit the course on Monday occupy the top-6 spots on the team leaderboard as conditions got increasingly windier as the day progressed. The Bulldogs opened the day strong, with Cowart, Mahé and Don posting birdies at No. 1. Georgia maintained that momentum for most of the front side and turned a 1-over before dropping nine more shots on the back side.
"The wind really picked up today, much more than yesterday," Brewer said. "You really had to be aware on a couple holes like 12, 13 and 14 because they're really exposed. You knew you would probably make a few bogeys, but you had to try not to make a score that would really hurt you. For the most part, we were able to do that."
No. 21 Baylor earned the first-round lead with a 3-over 287, two shots better than No. 11 Texas. Rounding out the top-10 teams on the leaderboard were No. 8 Alabama at 290; No. 5 Wake Forest and No. 17 LSU at 292; No. 13 Arizona State at 292; the Bulldogs at 294; No. 10 Arkansas and Vanderbilt at 295; and Northwestern and Furman at 296.
Georgia will be paired with Louisville and Northwestern for a second straight day on Tuesday. The Bulldogs, Cardinals and Wildcats will open play at No. 10 in the second round, among the first teams teeing off between 9:40-10:20 a.m. Holpfer will tee off from No. 1 at 10:00. Live scoring will be available via golfstat, and the tournament will air live on the Golf Channel from 2:30-5:30 p.m.
