Bulldogs Sweep Doubleheader From Akron
February 26, 2022 | Baseball
ATHENS, Ga. – The 15th-ranked Georgia Bulldogs swept a doubleheader against the Akron Zips Saturday, winning 10-0 and 7-2 in front of 3,498 spectators at Foley Field.
"Liam Sullivan settled in. I thought he gave us a really good start and got the win in game one. Offensively the bats came alive a little bit and scored some runs," said Georgia's Ike Cousins head baseball coach Scott Stricklin. "In game two, Dwight Allen got us going with a home run. I thought Luke Wagner did a great job, and Nolan Crisp was outstanding."
Game One: Georgia 10, Akron 0
In game one, Georgia's 10 runs came on 15 hits, led by a 3-for-3, 2 RBI performance from sophomore Garrett Spikes. In his first career plate appearance, freshman Dylan Taylor roped a two-RBI single in the eighth inning to end the contest. The 10-run rule came into effect following the seventh inning.
On the mound, sophomore Liam Sullivan went five scoreless innings, giving up only two hits and fanning two Zips. Sophomore Will Pearson went two innings in relief, giving up zero runs on four hits and striking out one. Freshman Coleman Willis made his debut and pitched a scoreless inning with two strikeouts.
After three scoreless frames, Georgia plated two-runs to take a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the fourth inning. Graduate Connor Tate knocked a leadoff single to center field and scored on an RBI single to left field by Spikes. Three batters later, Spikes would score on an RBI single to center by graduate Chaney Rogers.
In the fifth, the Bulldogs walked five times. A bases loaded walk by Spikes plated Cole Tate to extend the lead to three. After an Akron pitching change, Georgia plated yet another run after the fourth-consecutive walk to Ben Acton as Connor Tate scored to make it a 4-0 Bulldog lead.
Georgia continued to build on its lead in the sixth. After reaching base on leadoff single to the shortstop, graduate Ben Anderson scored on a sacrifice fly to left field by Connor Tate to give the Bulldogs a 5-0 edge.
In the seventh, the Bulldogs exploded for three runs. Spikes recorded his third hit of the game on a leadoff double to left field. Two batters later, sophomore Parks Harber brought senior Randon Jernigan home on a single to center field. With Harbor on first, Anderson roped a triple to center field to extend the lead to seven. Cole Tate followed with a single to right field to make the score 8-0.
The debutant Taylor sealed the game in the bottom of the eighth in his first career plate appearance to plate two Bulldogs and end the game 10-0.
Sullivan (1-0) picked up the win for the Bulldogs after five scoreless innings. Akron right-handed pitcher Taed Heydinger was tabbed with the loss.
Game Two: Georgia 7, Akron 2
The Zips would get on the board first in the second game of the day as they plated two runs in the first inning. Akron tallied a hit and two walks in the inning as Bulldog sophomore Garrett Brown struggled with his command. Brown finished the inning with two strikeouts and allowed two runs with only one of them being earned. He would be replaced by sophomore Luke Wagner in the second inning.
Redshirt freshman Dwight Allen II would answer with his first career home run to lead off the first inning on a towering shot to left-center field and the Zips lead was cut to one. He became the second Bulldog to that this season after Ben Anderson homered to lead off the season opener last Friday against Albany.
Both offenses would go quiet until the bottom of the fourth inning when Connor Tate led off with a double. Tate would later score on a sacrifice fly to shallow right field by redshirt senior Josh McAllister.
The Bulldogs tacked on two more runs in the bottom half of the fifth inning after Spikes laced a two-run single to left field, and Georgia took a 4-2 lead. The sophomore from Lawrenceville, Ga. finished the doubleheader going 5-7 with four RBIs.
Wagner, following a walk and a single off of his foot, would be replaced in the sixth inning by junior Nolan Crisp after allowing zero runs on two hits and two walks. Wagner pitched four innings and tallied six strikeouts, both of which are career-highs in a relief appearance for the Pennsylvania native.
Crisp was able to stymie the Akron bats as he worked around the walk and single to keep Georgia ahead 4-2. Crisp struck out Akron freshman Ian Pennington to get out of the jam.
In the bottom half of the inning, the Bulldogs tacked on three more runs following base hits from Chaney Rogers, Cole Wagner and Connor Tate. Georgia now led the game 7-2.
Crisp was able to further keep the Akron bats at bay as he pitched three scoreless innings with no runs, one hit and four strikeouts. He would be relieved by freshman Jake Poindexter in the ninth inning.
Poindexter finished his debut by retiring the only three batters he faced and recorded his first career strikeout as the Bulldogs would beat the Zips 7-2.
Luke Wagner (3-0) pitched four scoreless innings in relief and picked up the win, and Jackson Hickert (0-1) was the losing pitcher for the Zips.
The weekend series with the Akron Zips will conclude on Sunday, Feb. 27 at Foley Field. First pitch is slated now for 2 p.m.
