February 22, 2022 | Baseball
ATHENS, Ga. – The 15th-ranked Georgia Bulldogs defeated the Wofford Terriers 7-1 in a mid-week tilt Tuesday evening in front of 1,410 spectators at Foley Field.
The Bulldogs' seven runs came on nine hits, led by a 4-for-4, four-run, two-RBI performance from graduate Ben Anderson at the top of Georgia's (4-0) lineup, while five Bulldogs tallied one hit – including sophomore Corey Collins with a two-run home run. Anderson was a triple shy of completing the cycle at the plate.
"It was a strange game with the stoppages, the lights and the reviews," said Georgia's Ike Cousins head baseball coach Scott Stricklin. "It was just a strange, long game. We found a way to get through it. We did it with pitching, but offensively we have to get better. Corey Collins and Ben Anderson put that game away for us late on two big swings."
On the mound, the Bulldogs bullpen shined. Following a 22-minute light delay, sophomore Luke Wagner came in to relieve starting pitcher Garrett Brown. Luke Wagner (2-0) went 2.1 innings giving up one hit with five strikeouts to earn the win – a career-high. Sophomore Jaden Woods went 3.2 innings giving up one run on one hit and fanning a career-high seven Terriers in relief. Wofford (2-2) right-handed pitcher, Matthew Marchal was tabbed with the loss.
After a three-up three-down inning to start the game, the Bulldogs gained a pair of base runners thanks to a lead-off walk and a fielding error by the Terrier shortstop. With Cole Tate up to bat, Anderson scored from second on an RBI single down the third-base line to give Georgia the early 1-0 lead.
In the third, Anderson reached base on a leadoff double through the right side. After advancing to third on a wild pitch, Anderson
scored for the second time of the evening on a stand-up double by senior Cory Acton extending the Georgia lead to two. In the top of the fourth, Wofford loaded the bases with one out, however, Luke Wagner worked the Bulldogs out of the jam, striking out back-to-back Terriers to end the inning.
After three scoreless frames, Anderson reached base on a leadoff single – his fourth time on base while leading off tonight. Anderson advanced to second on a balk by the Terriers and three pitches later, Collins hit a two-run moon shot to right to give Georgia a 4-0 lead.
In the eighth, Wofford spoiled the Bulldogs shutout plating a run on a single to right-field by Brennen Dorighi. Georgia responded in the bottom of the inning. After beating the throw from short, redshirt-freshman Dwight Allen II advance to second on an error. A perfectly executed sacrifice bunt by Josh McAllister moved Allen II to third. Two batters later, Anderson's night continue when he sent a first-pitch fastball over the scoreboard to give Georgia a 7-1 lead. The Bulldogs would go on to win 7-1.
Georgia will be back in action for a weekend series with the Akron Zips on Feb. 25-27 at Foley Field. First pitch is slated for 5 p.m. on Friday.
