RIO GRANDE, Puerto Rico. --- The No. 12-ranked Georgia men's golf team set the single-round school record on Sunday to open the Puerto Rico Classic.

The Bulldogs fired a 23-under 265 to grab the first-round lead on Grand Reserve Country Club's par-72, 7,506-yard layout. Georgia is three clear of Oklahoma and seven better than Purdue after 18 holes.

Georgia's 23-under tally on Sunday eclipsed the school mark of 20-under set at the 2000 Golf World Invitational.

The four counting Bulldogs all landed inside the top 10 and combined for 29 birdies on Sunday. Senior Trent Phillips and junior Ben van Wyk paced Georgia at 7-under 65, good enough for third and three behind Patrick Welch of Oklahoma. Freshman Maxwell Ford signed for a career-best 5-under 67 for seventh and junior Nicolas Cassidy added a 4-under 68 for 10th. Freshman Buck Brumlow had Georgia's non-counting loop of 3-under 69, which matched his career low.

Phillips and van Wyk each recorded eight birdies. Phillips had five over his last six holes, while van Wyk opened with six over his first seven. Ford had seven birdies overall and closed with five over his final six, while Cassidy logged six overall.

Playing as individuals, senior Will Kahlstorf fired a 4-under 68 for 10th and junior Connor Creasy added a 1-under 71.

"This was one of those days as a coach that you embrace and sit back and enjoy," Georgia coach Chris Haack said. "Our guys were extremely dialed in and managed the golf course very well. We'll let them enjoy this day for a minute, but we know there's still a long way to go in the tournament and we must continue to perform at a high level. But it goes without saying, this is a day we'll never forget."

The Puerto Rico Classic will continue Monday and will conclude Tuesday. Georgia will be paired with Oklahoma and Purdue for a 7:30 a.m. EST shotgun start on Monday.
