February 12, 2022 | Women's Tennis
MADISON, Wis. – Despite a strong comeback, the third-ranked University of Georgia women's tennis team fell to No. 6 NC State 4-2 Saturday afternoon, in the Quarterfinals of the 2022 ITA Women's Indoor National Championship.
After winning No. 1 doubles, Georgia (3-1) dropped the doubles point to the Wolfpack (10-0). In doubles, the tandem of graduate Morgan Coppoc and junior Ania Hertel topped NC State's Abigail Rencheli and Amelia Rajecki, 6-2. The Wolfpack responded, breaking serve on courts two and three to complete the comeback and win 7-5. Freshmen Mell Reasco and Dasha Vidmanova fell to NC State's 30th-ranked Jaeda Daniel and Nell Miller, while freshman Guillermina Grant and graduate Meg Kowalski lost to #51 Sara Nayar and Priska Nugroho.
In singles, the Bulldogs got wins from No. 46 Kowalski and junior No. 39 Lea Ma. Ma paced the Bulldogs defeating NC State's No. 12 Jaeda Daniel in straight sets, 6-2, 6-1. This marked Ma's fourth-ranked win of the season, including her third this Spring. No. 95 Hertel and Vidmanova fell early in the match. Hertel losing to Nell Miller 6-4, 6-1 and Vidmanova to No. 124 Priska Nugroho 6-2, 6-3. Kowalski responded won a three-set thriller over Amelia Rajecki 6-2, 4-6, 6-4 to shift the momentum the Bulldogs way, but Coppoc dropped a heartbreaker to Sophie Abrams 6-4, 1-6, 6-4. No. 10 Reasco went unfinished, leading No. 40 Abigail Rencheli 3-6, 6-2, 5-5.
"We did a lot of things right today that we don't want to get lost in the final result," said Georgia associate head coach Drake Bernstein. "Until the end of sets, we played great doubles. Lea did a fantastic job for us getting a quick point on the board against the No. 12 player in the nation. We're really proud of the way she's competing. It was also fun to see the way that Meg and Morgan competed side by side today – they were feeding off of each other and had absolute battles there at the end. We've definitely learned some things today and we're encouraged to get out tomorrow and test ourselves against another top-10 team."
Georgia will face No. 7 Virginia in the consolation draw on Sunday, Feb. 13 at 1:00 p.m. ET.
