Three Bulldogs Pick Up Wins on Final Day of ITA All-American Qualifiers
October 04, 2022 | Men's Tennis
TULSA, Okla. – Three University of Georgia men's tennis athletes each picked up singles win in the singles qualifying draws at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association All-American Championships at the University of Tulsa Tennis Complex on Tuesday afternoon.
"Blake and Trent did a good job of staying focused and getting wins today," said volunteer assistant coach Will Reynolds. "Great effort from Teodor [Guisca], even though he came up just short. His opponent played at a high level throughout, but Teodor battled. He was down a set and 0-3 in the second, and still got it to a third set. He continues to show a fighting spirit and compete like a Dawg."
Giusca played in two matches, splitting results with a straight-set victory against Tulsa's Daniel Siddall and advancing to the final round of the qualifying draw. However, the fifth year came up just short in a three-set battle versus Stanford freshman Nishesh Basavareddy, the second-ranked player in the ITA Newcomer Rankings. Guisca concludes the event now standing with a 4-2 singles record in the fall.
Fellow fifth year athletes Trent Bryde and Blake Croyder both picked up straight-set wins of their own in the singles qualifying consolation bracket.
Bryde, who received a No. 17-32 seed in the qualifying draw, defeated Kevin Zhu of Penn by a 6-2, 6-4 result, improving his fall record to 2-3.
Crodyer, the No. 117-ranked singles player in the ITA preseason rankings, took down Louisville's Sergio Hernandez in a 6-3, 6-4 affair. The Marietta, Georgia native holds a 3-2 record through five matches this fall.
Ethan Quinn and Philip Henning will begin play in the singles main draw tomorrow. Quinn, who received a wildcard spot on September 16, will take on Illinois' Hunter Heck at noon ET, while the fifth year Henning will make his fall debut at 2 p.m. against Jacob Beckersteth, a junior from Michigan who spent most of last season at the fourth position in the Wolverines lineup.
Quinn has started his Bulldog career in impressive fashion, taking down three ranked opponents at the Southern Intercollegiate Championships, including the top-ranked player in the country, winning the singles title at the event.
Redshirt freshman Quinn and Bryde were also awarded a wildcard spot in the doubles main draw together. The Bulldog tandem is set to open play at 5:30 p.m. against Arizona State's Murphy Cassone and Jacob Bullard, who were ranked the No. 32 doubles team together in the ITA preseason rankings.
