October 22, 2022 | Men's Tennis

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – The Georgia men's tennis team finished a successful day three of the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Southeast Regional Championships on Saturday with two in the singles quarterfinals round and a doubles team in the semifinal round at Florida State University's Scott Speicher Memorial Tennis Center.

The singles main draw five seed Teodor Giusca and nine seed Blake Croyder won their third round matches today and advanced into the quarterfinal. In doubles, the field's top seeded team of Trent Bryde and Philip Henning won their third round and quarterfinal matches to earn a spot in the semifinals.

"We battled really hard today and had a good bit of success, but it's always tough to come out unblemished after such a busy day against top competition," said head coach Manny Diaz. "Really proud of Teodor and Blake for making it through to the quarterfinals. They both played solid tennis. We also saw a great battle from Trent. He lost a three-set match, but I'm really encouraged with his progress. In our doubles, we did a great job in the first match of the day and both teams advanced into the quarterfinals. Our team of Bryde and Henning really look exceptionally good in their second match. Really encouraged by the teamwork, comradery and discipline we're seeing out there from our squad."

In the singles main draw, two of the three Bulldogs playing in the third round won their contests and advanced into the quarterfinals.

No. 9 Croyder won his third-round match against Florida's Togan Tokac in straight-sets, by a 6-4, 6-4 result. With the victory, the senior improves to 5-2 in the fall and advances to the quarterfinals, where he will face former teammate and doubles partner Erik Grevelius, now at South Florida, on Sunday at 9 a.m.

No. 5 Giusca advanced to the quarterfinal round as well, defeating No. 12 Keshav Chopra (GT) 6-1, 6-4, improving to 7-2 on the season. His next opponent is Florida State's 13-seeded Youcef Rihane, with their match set to begin at 9 a.m. on Sunday as well.

The third-seeded Bryde's run in the singles portion of the tournament came to an end in the third round, as the senior fell to No. 14 Jonah Braswell of Florida by a 6-3, 2-6, 6-1 result. Bryde ends the event now with a 4-4 record on the season.

In the consolation draw, sophomores Thomas Paulsell and Miguel Perez Peña each won matches but had their tournament runs end.

While Perez Peña managed to swiftly defeat his round of 32 opponent, Rohan Sachdev of Georgia Tech, 6-1, 6-2, he could not beat his round of 16 opponent in a three-set battle. The Castellon de la Plana, Spain native eventually fell after an impressive second set by a 7-6(4), 1-6, 12-10 final.

Paulsell also picked up a win in the round of 32 against Stetson's Juan Jose Rodriguez in three sets, 6-1, 1-6, 10-7, but dropped the following match in straight sets to Kennesaw State's Raul Garcia. The Seattle native is now 5-3 in the fall.

In doubles, Georgia saw its two tandems advance to the quarterfinals and one make the semifinal.

Top-seeded Bryde and Henning played outstanding on Saturday, defeating Florida Gulf Coast's Max Damm and Magnus Johnson in the third round, 8-3, as well as South Florida's No. 9 Alvin Tudorica and Bruno Oliveira in the quarterfinals by an 8-4 score. The Georgia seniors advanced into the semifinals with the win and will play Georgia Southern's Pol Del Castillo and Judson Blair on Sunday at 10 a.m. for a spot in the championship round.

The second seed in the field, Croyder and Britton Johnston, opened the day with an impressive win over Miami's Casper Christensen and Martin Katz in an 8-4 result. However, the pair fell to the 10-seed, Florida's Jonah Braswell and Lukas Greif, in the quarterfinal for their first loss of the season. Croyder and Johnston end the tournament now at 6-1 on the fall together.

The doubles tournament is played in an eight-game pro set format, with no-ad scoring and a tiebreaker at 7-7 through the quarterfinals. The semifinals and finals will switch to a best-of-three sets, with a breaker in the third set if needed.

The main draw singles matches are be played in a best of three set format with no-ad scoring. The consolation draw will be played in the same way, with the added change of a 10-point breaker for the third set.

The event will run through Monday with the singles and doubles finals being played on its final day. Livestreaming of each match can be found on the track.tennis website. Georgia and Florida tie for the second-most seeded players in the singles main draw with three each.
