Vecic Advances to the Finals in Florence

FLORENCE, S.C. — University of Georgia women's tennis freshman Alexandra Vecic earned a berth in the McLeod for Health Florence Open (ITF Florence 25K) final on Saturday, Oct. 15 at the Dr. Eddie Floyd Florence Tennis Center.
"Alex has had a terrific run in Florence," said Georgia associate head coach Drake Bernstein. "She has had several long, tiring battles, but continues to find a way. It is tremendous to see her find the results that she earns every day in practice."
Vecic, a native of Singen, Germany, defeated Maria Mateas (WTA 284) in the semifinals 6-3, 3-6, 7-5 to clinch a spot in the finals. The freshman upset No. 1 seed Hanna Chang (WTA 214) in the opening round of the tournament 6(2)-7, 6-0, 6-1. In the second round, Vecic squared off against fellow Georgia teammate Mell Reasco (ITA 13). She topped Reasco – a 2022 All-American – in straight sets 6-3, 6-2 before outlasting Olivia Lincer (WTA 745) 6-3, 4-6, 6-1 in the quarterfinals.
The freshman is set to face the No. 4 seed, Peyton Sterns (WTA 262) in the finals of the McLeod for Health Florence Open on Sunday, Oct. 16 at 1 p.m. Sterns, the 2022 NCAA singles champion, is among her second-straight ITF 25K finals after winning the Austin 25K on Oct. 2.
