Strong Start for the Bulldogs at the ITA Southeast Regionals

October 15, 2022 | Women's Tennis

ATLANTA, Ga. — The University of Georgia women's tennis team posted 10 wins – nine singles and one doubles – on Friday, during the opening day of the ITA Southeast Regional hosted by Georgia Tech.

"We had a good start to our weekend at one of the toughest regionals in the country," said Georgia associate head coach Drake Bernstein. "One of the many highlights of the day was Mai getting her first ranked win as a Bulldog. She battled from start to finish and played a complete match.

Georgia opened the morning with doubles play. The sophomore tandem of Guillermina Grant and Dasha Vidmanova found themselves in an exhilarating match against North Florida's Kit Gulihur and Isabel Oliveira. Despite a hard-fought effort, the Bulldogs dropped the match in a tiebreaker 8-7 (5). However, the duo of freshman Anastasiia Lopata and sophomore Mai Nirundorn cruised to victory, posting an 8-2 win over Cade Cricchio and Olympe Lancelot.

In singles action, all five Bulldogs posted straight-set wins in the round of 64. Nirundorn topped Stetson's Noa Cohen 6-2, 6-3, while Vidmanova dominated Florida A&M's Genesis Whitelock 6-1, 6-0. Grant posted the next Georgia win, with a 6-3, 7-6(2) victory over Miami's Maya Tahan. Senior Lea Ma defeated North Florida's Megan Forster 6-2, 6-4, while Lopata closed out the perfect round of 64 with a 6-2, 6-3 victory over Georgia Southern's Silvia Martinez.

In evening action, Nirundorn was the first Bulldog to clinch a spot in the round of 16 thanks to a 6-3, 6-1 victory over Florida International's Kamila Umarova. She was quickly followed by Vidmanova cruised to a 6-0, 6-1 win against Georgia Tech's Ruth Marsh. Ma topped Central Florida's Jaleesa Leslie 6-2, 6-4, while Lopata earned the final win over the day for Georgia, defeating Florida Gulf Coast's Emma Bardet 7-5, 6-2.

"We are looking forward to more opportunities tomorrow, with a couple of matches against Florida and Georgia Tech in singles," Bernstein said.

The Bulldogs will continue play at the ITA Southeast Regional on Saturday, Oct. 15 with two rounds of doubles beginning at 9 a.m. and the singles round of 16 approximately at 2 p.m. Consolation will continue throughout the day.
