Paulsell and Perez Peña Lead Georgia to Consolation Finals at Four-In-The-Fall

October 01, 2022 | Men's Tennis

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – The University of Georgia men's tennis team defeated the Tulane Blue squad this afternoon at the Alabama Four-In-The-Fall tournament, with sophomores Thomas Paulsell and Miguel Perez Peña picking up their second singles wins in two days at the University of Alabama Tennis Stadium.

The Bulldogs will move into the consolation bracket finals and face off against the Alabama Crimson team, represented by Enzo Aguiard and Roan Jones.

"Thomas and Miguel looked good again today," said associate head coach Jamie Hunt. "They both took care of business and I'm happy that they are implementing all of the things we are working with them on in these matches."

Play on the second day opened in doubles, where fifth year Britton Johnston and Perez Peña represented the Georgia Black team. The two were unable to overcome their Tulane Green Waves opponents Charlie Barry and William Keterson, falling to the tandem in a 6-4 decision.

Paulsell continued his impressive play and took down another opponent in straight sets, this time against Tulane's redshirt junior Charlie Berry by a 6-1, 6-4 score. Berry, a Limerick, Ireland native, spent most of last season in the sixth position for the Green Wave, finishing the year 7-4 there.

Perez Peña followed up his three-set victory with a win against Tulane freshman William Kesterson, claiming the match in a 6-2, 6-3 result. Keterson was a former four-star recruit according to tennisrecruiting.net before enrolling at Tulane.

The Bulldogs will open with doubles play tomorrow at 12:30 p.m. and then transition into singles starting at 2:30 p.m. For the final day of play on Sunday, doubles will start at 11 a.m. and singles at 12:30 p.m.

To advance in the field, a team will need to win two of their three matches in singles and doubles, meaning one in doubles and singles or two in singles. If a pair wins only one of those three matches in each round, they will not progress to the next round of the tournament.
The tournament will be played as best of three sets, including a full third set, with no-Ad scoring. Each participating school will have two doubles teams playing in the field, with both acting as one unit throughout.
