Georgia Women Sweep, Men Split Against ASU, Mizzou

ATHENS, Ga. – Powered by strong performances from their veterans, the University of Georgia men's and women's swimming and diving teams posted a strong day Saturday in a double dual against Arizona State and Missouri at Gabrielsen Natatorium.
In the women's competition, Georgia (3-0, 1-0 SEC) defeated Arizona State, 203-90, and topped Missouri, 190-105. On the men's side, the Bulldogs (2-1, 1-0 SEC) bested the Tigers, 205-95, and fell to the Sun Devils, 155.5-145.5, in a tightly contested match. In other action, Arizona State's men prevailed, 191-109, and the Missouri women won by a 164.5-133.5 margin.
Women – Georgia 203, Arizona State 90 | Georgia 190-105
Georgia's morning opened with an impressive performance in the 200 medley relay as graduate Marie Schobel, senior Zoie Hartman, graduate Callie Dickinson, and sophomore Eboni McCarty posted a winning time of 1:39.18, sparked by Schobel's 25.00 leadoff split.
Schobel continued the impressive start to her season with a pair of individual wins, taking the 100 backstroke (53.85) and the 200 backstroke (1:56.58) with B-cuts in both events. Hartman also earned a B-cut in the 200 breaststroke, along with first-place times in the 100 breaststroke and 200 IM. Dickinson swept both butterfly races, posting a B-cut in the 200 butterfly, while McCarty won in the 50 freestyle.
At the diving well, junior Meghan Wenzel earned two Zone cuts in the meet, winning the 3-meter with a score of 309.70 and placing second on the 1-meter at 270.65. Sophomore Abby McCulloh once again dominated the distance events, taking both the 500 and 1,000 freestyles. Additionally, junior Sloane Reinstein prevailed in the 200 freestyle with a time of 1:47.93.
"I thought they did a really good job of stepping up," Tom Cousins Women's Swimming & Diving Head Coach Stefanie Williams Moreno said following the meet. "Arizona State and Missouri are really good competition for us. For the first real dual meet, especially for the SEC meet of the season, I thought they did a great job whether they were in their best events or winning events or getting second or third. I thought, overall, from the freshmen to the seniors, they did a great job."
Men – Georgia 205, Missouri 95 | Arizona State 155.5, Georgia 145.5
The Georgia men acquitted themselves well in a hard-fought battle with a talented Arizona State squad, remaining in contention to win through the final relay.
The Bulldogs' veteran backstroke group turned in an outstanding performance, beginning in the 100 backstroke as seniors Ian Grum (47.38) and Bradley Dunham (47.43) and junior Wesley Ng (47.51) swept the top three spots with B-cuts. Later, in the 200 backstroke, Grum and Dunham again went 1-2 with B-cut times (1:42.91, 1:44.09).
In diving, graduate Kevin Li posted a strong day, finishing second on the 1-meter (302.50) and the 3-meter (337.40) with Zone cuts in each. In the 50 freestyle, senior Dillon Downing took first, as did junior Luca Urlando in the 100 butterfly. In the 500 freestyle, graduate Andrew Abruzzo, juniors Jake Magahey and Tommy-Lee Camblong, and freshman Sam Powe finished in the top four spots.
"I was really proud of the way the guys came out," Men's Swimming & Diving Head Coach Neil Versfeld said. "Going back-to-back days was a challenge for them this early in the season doing a bunch of off events. The guys really came out firing and swinging this morning. It was a fin one. I could not be prouder of them right now."
