September 26, 2021 | Women's Tennis
OXFORD, MISS. — The Bulldogs remained perfect in doubles play and notched four more singles victories on the final day of the Ole Miss Fall Invite. In total Georgia racked up 26 wins over the weekend — 14 singles and 12 doubles.
Juniors Ania Hertel and Lea Ma, and freshmen Guillermina Grant and Mell Reasco all notched singles victories in straight sets. No. 19 Ma picked defeated No. 114 Karine-Marion Job of Kansas State (6-3, 6-0). This marked her first win over a ranked opponent this season.
Hertel and Grand both topped their Kansas State opponents (6-2, 6-2), while Reasco beat Florentine Dekkers of Kansas State (6-1, 6-1).
Senior Alee Clayton fell to Kansas State's Rosanna Maffei in straight sets, while freshman Mai Nirundorn lost a back-and-forth match in the third set.
In doubles, all four Georgia teams won. The fiftieth-ranked tandem of Grant and Hertel jumped on Ole Miss' Sabina Machalova and Ludmila Karisova, 6-0, while the forty-second ranked duo of Coppoc and Reasco defeated Kelsey Mize and Elysia Pool of Ole Miss, 6-1. Meg Kowalski and Ma defeated Ole Miss' Anaelle Leclerq and Lillian Gabrielsen, 6-3, while Clayton and Nirundorn defeated Ole Miss' Reka Zadori and Rachel Krzyzak, 6-4.
"We had a very successful weekend here in Oxford," said Georgia associate head coach Drake Bernstein. "It's so energizing to see this team together. They are a very close-knit group that really bring out the best in each other. I think that's a big reason why we went 12-0 in doubles play this weekend while mixing up partners each day. These girls play for each other and for the University of Georgia."
"Our freshmen have brought a new energy to the group and all three continue to blossom," Bernstein said.
"Anna has taken a huge stride in her game over the past few months," said Bernstein. "She brought terrific energy all weekend both on the singles and doubles courts. She's playing aggressive with confidence and things are coming together for her."
"We look forward to getting onto the clay next week and building on team momentum that we built here," Bernstein said.
The Bulldogs will be back in action next week at the ITF Hilton Head 15K and the ITA All-American Championship.
