Bulldogs Conclude Play in the Battle of the Bay

SAN FRANCISCO, CALIF. — The Bulldogs conclude play with two doubles wins on a dreary day in the Battle of the Bay.
With early morning showers delaying play, the Bulldogs finally took the court in the afternoon. Freshman Guillermina Grant and senior Meg Kowalski immediately went to work. The duo defeated Martinez Vaquero and Mushika of USF, 8-0, while graduate Morgan Coppoc and freshman Mai Nirundorn played a thrilling match with VCU's tandem of Exposito Diaz Delgado and Sorkin, winning 8-6, to advance to the semifinals.
Grant and Kowalski faced Zaar and Redelijik of Pepperdine in the semifinals of the doubles draw. In a match that went down to the wire, the Pepperdine duo defeated Grant and Kowalski in a tie-breaker, 8-7 (7-5). Coppoc and Nirundorn squared up Pepperdine's Broadus and Iamachkine but fell 8-2.
After yesterday's day of dominance, Coppoc faced VCU's Paola Exposito Diaz Delgado in the semifinal's. Despite a strong performance, Coppoc fell in straight sets, 7-5, 7-5, to Exposito Diaz Delgado.
"We feel that we got exactly what we needed out of this event," said Georgia associate head coach Drake Bernstein. "It was a solid starting point and we will be coming back to Athens with areas to work on before our trip to Ole Miss next week."
"Our girls competed well and all three of them took a step forward from where we were at at the start of the tournament," Bernstein said.
"I'd like to thank Peter Bartlett, the California Tennis Club, and our host families for making this such an incredible experience for our team," said Bernstein. "It truly is a first-class event hosted by first-class people."
Georgia will return to action next week when they travel to Oxford, Miss. for the Ole Miss Fall Tournament (Sept. 24-26). The Bulldogs will face off against Alabama, Kansas State, and host Ole Miss.
