ATHENS, GA. — The Georgia women's tennis team opens the fall tournament season at the Battle of the Bay hosted by the University of San Francisco this Friday (Sept. 17) at the California Tennis Club.
The Bulldogs will play a series of singles and doubles matches for three days against student-athletes from Kansas, Pacific, Pepperdine, San Diego, USC, USF, VCU, and Wisconsin. The matches will count for the individual records but no team score will be kept.
Georgia will send graduate Morgan Coppoc, senior Meg Kowalski, and freshmen Guillermina Grant and Mai Nirundorn to compete with Coppoc and Nirundorn as one doubles team and Grant and Kowalski forming the second.
The Bulldogs return five letter winners from last year's squad that posted a 23-2 mark, including 13-0 in SEC play to win the regular season and SEC Tournament and finished the year ranked No. 4 in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association final rankings.
"We're excited to get our 2021-22 season kicked off in San Francisco," said Georgia associate head coach Drake Bernstein. "The Battle of the Bay is a prestigious event and we are grateful to be a part of this year's field."
"Our team has been working hard and we are ready to find out what our starting point for the year is. We have come to San Francisco hungry to compete and eager to learn more about where we need to improve in competition," Bernstein said.
"Our freshmen are particularly eager to compete as COVID-19 greatly limited their tournament schedules," said Bernstein. "Their first few weeks with the team have been incredible and they are quickly understanding what it means to wear the Red and Black. I'm excited to see them compete for us."
The winner of the women's event will receive a main draw wild card to the Berkeley WTA singles main draw and the Rancho Santa Fe WTA challenger singles main draw. The doubles winner may earn wild cards to women's professional tournaments but are not guaranteed.
The tournament will feature 16 individuals and six doubles teams ranked in the ITA Preseason Polls.
