August 31, 2021 | Swimming & Diving
ATHENS, Ga. – Highlighted by five SEC dual meets and an in-state NCAA Championships, the University of Georgia swimming and diving team unveiled its 2021-22 competition schedule Tuesday afternoon.
"It's a great schedule that will provide our team with strong challenges," said Tom Cousins Swimming & Diving Head Coach Jack Bauerle. "We always want our dual season to prepare our team for the rigors of both the SEC and NCAA Championships. This schedule gives us the opportunity to take on a variety of different opponents, and that's the way a schedule should be."
The 2021-22 season opens with consecutive home meets at Gabrielsen Natatorium, beginning with a non-conference dual meet against North Carolina on Friday, Oct. 22 at 6 p.m., followed by SEC foe South Carolina on Saturday, Oct. 23 at 11 a.m. The Bulldogs and Tar Heels last faced off in October 2019 in Chapel Hill, while South Carolina and Georgia met in a home-and-home series last season.
Georgia heads on the road for the remainder of the fall schedule, starting with a trip to rival Florida on Friday, Oct. 29 at 10 a.m. The Bulldogs travel to Auburn the following Friday (Nov. 5) for a noon tilt before closing the fall portion with the Georgia Tech Invitational on Nov. 18-20 in Atlanta. The Tech Invite will provide the Bulldogs with an early look at the McCauley Aquatic Center, the host site of this year's NCAA Championships.
Following the holiday break, the diving team opens the winter slate with the Tennessee Diving Invitational on Jan. 3-6 in Knoxville, Tenn.. The full team returns to action on Saturday, Jan. 8 with a home meet against Alabama at 10 a.m., followed by Tennessee coming to Athens on Saturday, Jan. 22 at 11 a.m. The regular season concludes on Saturday, Jan. 29 with the Senior Day meet against Emory.
The SEC Swimming & Diving Championships will return to their traditional mixed-gender format, running Tuesday, Feb. 15 through Saturday, Feb. 19 in Knoxville. After the Last Chance Meet on Feb. 26-27 in Athens, the NCAA Championships begin with the Zone B Diving Championships on March 7-9, followed the women's meet on March 16-19 and men's meet on March 23-26. All three NCAA events will be held at the McCauley Aquatic Center on the Georgia Tech campus in Atlanta.
Led by Bauerle in his 43rd season as the helm, Georgia enters 2021-22 with a robust and promising roster looking to build further upon the tremendous successes of the 2020-21 season. The Bulldogs were the only SEC program to finish in the top 10 in both the men's (4th) and women's (8th) NCAA Championships, with the men posting the second-highest finish in school history. The Bulldog men also notched just the second undefeated dual season in program history and finished second at the SEC Championships with a record point total for a runner-up. The women's squad placed third at SECs, winning six titles in their home pool.
