July 26, 2021 | Swimming & Diving
TOKYO – With a personal-best time of 1:55.28 in the semifinals, University of Georgia swimming alum Gunnar Bentz advanced to the men's 200-meter butterfly final during the third day of swimming competition at the 2020 Summer Olympic Games Monday evening at the Tokyo Aquatics Centre.
Bentz, who became the first male Georgia swimmer to win a gold medal five years ago in Rio, separated himself from a crowded field in the second semifinal heat and placed sixth overall. Earlier in the morning, he finished 11th overall in the preliminary round with a time of 1:55.46. Bentz will compete in the 200 fly final tomorrow evening in Tokyo, with the race scheduled to begin at 9:49 p.m. EDT.
In the women's 200-meter freestyle semifinals, fellow alum Allison Schmitt narrowly missed out on reaching her third Olympic 200 free final, finishing 10th with a time of 1:56.80. In prelims, Schmitt placed 12th with a time of 1:57.10.
The Olympic swimming competition continues Tuesday morning with a pair of Bulldog alums taking to the water. Following a bronze medal in the women's 400-meter individual medley, Hali Flickinger will swim in the 200-meter butterfly prelims at 6:26 a.m.
Later in the session, Nic Fink will make his Olympic debut in the men's 200-meter breaststroke prelims at 6:48 a.m. Fink will be joined by fellow Athens Bulldog Swim Club pro swimmer Andrew Wilson, who placed sixth in the 100-meter breaststroke final Sunday evening. If Flickinger, Fink, or Wilson advance, they will compete in semifinal races Tuesday evening beginning at 9:30 p.m.
