Brooks Bulletin - July 1

July 01, 2021 | General, Brooks Bulletin

Good Afternoon!

The summer months typically give us time to gather our breath and evaluate the past year. While we have taken time to reflect, I can tell you June has not followed that exact formula! We are putting in a lot of work to make sure we have an exciting 2021-22 athletic season as we get ready to welcome Bulldog Nation back to Athens.

My goal is to build championship-caliber programs in every sport. I have been lucky enough to begin that process these last six months, which included the hiring of two outstanding coaches.

Caryl Smith Gilbert, who won a pair of national championships in the last three years at USC, comes to Athens to lead our men's and women's track & field teams. You are going to love Caryl - she leads with integrity, tenacity and toughness with an unmatched energy. Those qualities have made her one of the most respected and revered coaches in the nation, and I am confident she will be a tremendous leader and mentor for our student-athletes.  I look forward to watching her take this program to even greater heights in the years to come.

We were fortunate to have Coach Lu Harris-Champer build our softball program into one of the nation's most elite over the last two decades. We were also lucky that she brought Tony Baldwin on to her staff.  After a competitive search, we didn't have to go very far to hire Tony as our next head softball coach. In his nine seasons here at Georgia as an assistant, the team made six super regionals and three Women's College World Series. I am confident his coaching ability, recruiting prowess and leadership will continue to elevate the program's success.

This past weekend, we wrapped up the Topgolf Live Stadium Tour at Sanford Stadium. The 10 days of teeing it up 'above the hedges' was a great event that we hope to bring back sometime in the future.  Thank you to all of our fans that were able to make it out and played on through all of the rain, heat and changes in schedules.  We hope to do more unique fan experiences like this and are open to any feedback or ideas you might have.  Send us an email at ugaexperience@uga.edu.

Another thank you to all of our fans who participated in our first Georgia Florida Virtual Race this past spring. Thanks to the help of you DGDs, we were able to donate over $10,000 to both the Children's Healthcare Of Atlanta and to campus for the UGA General Student Emergency Fund.  Look for more information in the fall on how we are going to continue this rivalry race for a good cause virtually and in Jacksonville.

Last, but certainly not least, I want to recognize the 26 current / former student athletes and coaches who will be competing for nine different nations in five different sports at the Tokyo Olympics (starts July 23rd).  This is tied for the 3rd largest contingent in Georgia Athletics history.  Join me in cheering on these DGD's as they represent the G and go for Gold!

Starting next month, keep an eye out for important information on the journey back to Athens this fall and how we hope to make your gameday experience even better.  Until then, Go Dawgs!
