SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. — Buoyed by a trio of 1-over 73s, the No. 11-ranked Georgia women's golf team posted a 7-over 295 in Saturday's second round of the NCAA Women's Golf Championships. The Bulldogs are tied for 17th place with No. 13 Kent State through 36 holes.
"It was a solid round," head coach Josh Brewer said. "We wanted to be under par to move a little higher up the leaderboard, but again conditions were tough and it's a national championship. We finally made a few birdies and putts went in at the very end of the round. Hopefully, that springboards us in Sunday."
Georgia notched five birdies over the final four holes, three of those from freshman Isabella Holpfer.
All 24 teams will play a third round on Sunday, with a cut of the top-15 teams thereafter advancing to a fourth round on Monday. Following Monday's round, the top-8 teams will move into a match play bracket to determine the national champion.
Jenny Bae, Holpfer and Jo Hua Hung all shot 73 on Saturday. Candice Mahé's 76 rounded out the Bulldogs' counting tallies. A day after counting an 81, Georgia dropped a 77 from Caterina Don.
"You'd love to throw away an under-par round," Brewer said. "At the same time, it's just how it all plays out. All we can do is worry about us at this moment. We just need a couple of putts to go in. We're excited about tomorrow and the chance to move up even more on the leaderboard."
Bae's loop was a steady one featuring 15 pars. After teeing off from No. 10, she bogeyed No. 12 and No. 18 to turn at 2-over. Bae gained one of those strokes back with a birdie at No. 7.
Holpfer was 3-over through 14 holes but went birdie-birdie-bogey-birdie thereafter to get within a shot of par, cutting eight shots off her first-round effort on Friday.
"I think my ball striking was good throughout the whole day and then it just depended on if the balls were going to drop," Holpfer said. "On the last four holes, I had three birdies. My front nine, I hit a lot of greens and just two-putted. I had to be patient and wait for those putts to drop. We played in the morning today so there was a little less wind but yesterday the wind was not the reason I had that result (on Friday)."
Hung fought through a slow start with a double-bogey at No. 10 and a bogey at No. 12 before birdies at No. 13 and No. 18 brought her back to 1-over at the midway point. She was even on the front side, mixing five pars with birdies at No. 4 and No. 8 and bogeys at No. 3 and No. 6.
No. 6 Stanford's 10-under effort on Saturday pushed the Cardinal atop the team leaderboard at 7-under 569. No. 2 Duke is second, four strokes back.
Stanford's Rachel Heck, the only golfer to shoot in the 60s on Friday, shot 5-under 67 in the second round. She is at 8-under, five strokes ahead of both Duke's Gina Kim and Louisville's Lauren Hartlage. For Georgia, Bae is tied for 40th at 148, Mahé is tied for 53rd at 149, Holpfer is tied for 96th at 154 and Don and Hung are both tied for 105th at 155.
Georgia will be paired with Baylor and Kent State on Sunday. The Bulldogs, Bears and Golden Flashes will tee off from No. 10 between 2:30-3:14 p.m. ET. Live scoring is available at www.golfstat.com.
"We're motivated to go into tomorrow and make a lot of birdies," Holpfer said. "My last hole today I had a two-footer for birdie so that's good momentum heading into tomorrow."
