Georgia Beats No. 7 Florida 6-1

May 16, 2021 | Baseball

GAINESVILLE, Fla.— Garrett Blaylock's three-run home run in the first inning set the tone as Georgia beat seventh-ranked Florida 6-1 Sunday in front of a crowd of 2,715 at the Florida Ballpark.

The Bulldogs (29-20, 12-15 SEC) used six pitchers to limit the Gators to a run on eight hits as they stranded 12 men on base. Florida dropped to 35-16 overall, 17-10 in the SEC. Sophomore right-hander Jonathan Cannon (3-2) started and provided the Bulldogs with 5.2 innings, allowing one run on six hits with four strikeouts for the victory. UF starter Franco Aleman fell to 1-3, surrendering five runs on seven hits over seven innings.

In the first, Cole Tate and Josh McAllister were on base after back-to-back one-out singles before Blaylock's blast. It was his eighth home run of the year. In the second, senior Chaney Rogers made it 4-1 with a leadoff home run, his fourth of the season. The Gators got a run back in the second on a two-out RBI-single by Sterlin Thompson. Florida had a chance for a big inning in the fifth, loading the bases with two outs but came up empty as Collin Caldwell came in and registered a key strikeout.

Georgia pushed across two more runs on one hit and two Gator miscues in the seventh to extend its lead to 6-1. Michael Polk and Will Pearson took care of the seventh with Luke Wager handling the eighth. In the ninth, Ben Harris pitched a final perfect frame with a pair of strikeouts as the Bulldogs salvaged the final game of the series.

For the first time this season, Georgia redshirt junior Connor Tate, the team's leading power hitter and run producer, was out of the starting lineup. He was hit by a pitch in the leg in Saturday's contest. Tate had started the first 48 games (47 in right field, one at first base). Tate has reached base safely in 28 straight games and has an 11-game hitting streak, both career highs. Freshman Garrett Spikes got the Sunday start in right field. Also, graduate left fielder Riley King missed the game with a sore knee.

Georgia returns to action Tuesday at Georgia Tech with first pitch at 6:02 p.m. The game will be available on ACC Network Extra and can be heard on the Georgia Bulldog Sports Network.

Georgia's Ike Cousins Head Baseball Coach Scott Stricklin
On the game…
"Jonathan (Cannon) was really big for us. We needed a quality start. The bullpen has been stressed out the last few weeks. We hoped to get to the seventh with him, and he got us almost through six. I thought he toughed it out and did a good job."

On the offense today missing two starters (Connor Tate and Riley King)
"Tough news, it was about an hour before game time and Connor Tate can't go and Riley was out too. Connor tried to go during BP (batting practice) and just couldn't quite do it. He took a pitch to the back of the leg last night, and it's really painful for him. It's just the next man up, and we had a lot of guys come in and play well today. This was a really good team win for us."
