Bulldogs Sweep Singles At Arkansas

April 02, 2021 | Men's Tennis

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. — Down 1-0 after dropping the doubles point, the No. 11-ranked Georgia men's tennis team started strong in singles and surged to a 6-1 win over Arkansas on Friday afternoon at the Billingsley Tennis Center.

The victory was the Bulldogs' fourth in a row overall and fourth straight in SEC play. Georgia (12-5, 6-4 SEC) is off Sunday and returns to action next Friday with their home finale, hosting No. 6 Texas A&M on Senior Day at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex.

"It was a good bounce back after losing a close doubles point," Georgia head coach Manuel Diaz said. "It's always a challenge on the road when playing from behind but our guys showed good fight and composure. I'm proud of everyone and now we've got a great opportunity next Friday against Texas A&M."

Arkansas (8-9, 2-5) earned the doubles point with Nico Rousset and Alex Reco's win over Philip Henning and Erik Grevelius, 6-1, at the No. 3 spot, and Melvin Manuel and Adrien Burdet's 7-6 (7-5) win over Billy Rowe and Blake Croyder, 7-6 (7-5), at No. 2.

Georgia took control of the singles from the outset, taking the opening set on all six courts. Tyler Zink got the first win for the Bulldogs, at No. 2, beating Maxim Verboven, 6-3, 6-4, to tie the match 1-1. Billy Rowe, who had clinched Georgia's past two matches, got a less dramatic victory Friday, beating Adrien Burdet 6-3, 6-1, to make it 2-1 Bulldogs.

Baptiste Anselmo put Georgia up 3-1 with a 6-2, 6-2 win over Enrique Paya at No. 6, and Croyder sealed the Bulldog victory at No. 4, beating Aleksa Bucan 6-4, 7-5. At 5-5 in the second set, Croyder broke Bucan's serve and then closed out the match, delivering a forehand volley winner at the end of a long rally on match point.

The two remaining matches continued after the clinch and Trent Bryde added a 6-2, 7-6 (7-3) win over Alex Reco at the No. 1 spot. In the final match, the only one to go three sets, Henning defeated Rousset, 6-0, 2-6, 6-4.
