Maya Caldwell Selected by Indiana Fever in WNBA Draft

April 15, 2021 | Women's Basketball

ATHENS – Maya Caldwell, who just completed her senior season on the Georgia Lady Bulldog basketball team, was selected by the Indiana Fever in the third round of the WNBA draft Thursday evening.

As the 33rd overall pick, Caldwell becomes the 24th Lady Bulldog all time -- and the fourth in six seasons under head coach Joni Taylor -- to be drafted.

She played in each of Georgia's 122 games over the last four years, drawing 58-straight starts to end her career. The two-time SEC Academic Honor Roll Selection graduated with a degree in communication studies last May and is pursuing a master's in non-profit management and leadership.

"I am so honored and humbled and want to thank the Indiana Fever for selecting me," Caldwell said. "Having an opportunity to be drafted and possibly play in the WNBA is a dream come true. All glory to God. This is not possible without my family, friends, Coach Joni and my sisters at UGA. Thank you Dawg Nation for the support over the last four seasons."

Caldwell made the 2021 Southeastern Conference All-Tournament Team after leading Georgia on a remarkable run. Following a 27 point-effort against Florida in the regular season finale, she paced Georgia with 20 points against No. 17 Kentucky and 19 against No. 2 Texas A&M.

She was part of a senior class that led Georgia to the SEC tournament championship game for the first time since 2004 and its highest NCAA tournament seeding since 2007.

"I am so proud of Maya," Taylor said. "She has worked extremely hard to earn this opportunity, and we are ecstatic for her. There is no doubt Maya is a talented player. What people may not see is how much time she spends in the gym each and every day. Not only that, she is one of the greatest people you will ever meet. There is no one more deserving of this tremendous opportunity."

Caldwell totaled 37 double-figure scoring games in her career, scoring over 20 points on three occasions.
