Four Track & Field Bulldogs Earn SEC Weekly Honors
April 13, 2021 | Track & Field
ATHENS, Ga. --- A quartet of Georgia track and field team members earned Southeastern Conference weekly honors following the Spec Towns Invitational over the weekend, according to a league announcement.
Â
Junior Karel Tilga was named the SEC Men's Field Athlete of the Week, sophomore Matthew Boling was named the SEC Men's Newcomer of the Week, sophomore Jasmine Moore was named the SEC Co-Women's Field Athlete of the Week and sophomore Anna Hall was named the SEC Women's Newcomer of the Week.
Â
These four SEC weekly honors add to the pair that senior Marie-Therese Obst won earlier this season.  Tilga was also named the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) National Men's Athlete of the Week on Tuesday.  Obst earned a similar honor after a record-breaking performance in the javelin last month.
Â
Tilga, a native of Tartu, Estonia, completed his first collegiate decathlon in two years with the second-best score (8,484) in collegiate history to win his competition.  Winning three of 10 events and setting a school record, Tilga surged into the national lead by nearly 800 points and turned in the highest ever decathlon score before the month of May.
Tilga became the No. 4 all-time Estonian with his performance and easily cruised past the Olympic standard score of 8,350.  He was in a fierce battle with former Bulldog Garrett Scantling (8,476) & former Wisconsin Badger Zach Ziemek (8,213) for the title as the decathletes finished 1-2-3 in the world this year.
Â
Boling, a native of Houston, Texas, made his outdoor collegiate debut by winning the long jump and the 100-meter dash at UGA's first home meet.  He worked up to a top effort of 26 feet, 3 ¾ inches on his sixth and final attempt in the long jump on Friday.  This gave him the second-longest mark in school history (best since 1994) and put him No. 4 nationally.  Boling returned to the track on a rainy Saturday and ran his first collegiate 100m in 10.32 for the victory.
Â
In what was both her collegiate outdoor and home debut, Moore, a native of Grand Prairie, Texas, secured an Olympic standard in the long jump and this year's No. 2 NCAA marks in both the long and triple jumps, set a school long jump record and moved into the world's top six for 2021 in both events.  Moore began her opener by traveling 22-5 to open the long jump with a 0.4 meters/second wind, which surpassed Bowerman winner Keturah Orji (22-4.25) for the school record and moved Moore to No. 10 on the all-time collegiate performer list. Â
Moore returned to the facility on Saturday under a steady rain and once again wasted no time setting the tone in the triple jump.  She registered an opening attempt of 46-4.25 (0.0w) to rocket to No. 2 on Georgia's all-time list (behind Orji) and take over the No. 9 spot on the collegiate all-time performer's list.
Â
Hall, a native of Greenwood, Colo., won five of seven events in the heptathlon to help score the second-highest total in UGA history (6,200) and win.  She stands second nationally and third in the world with the best score for the Lady Bulldogs since Kendell Williams went for 6,564 in 2017.  Hall's performance included a clearance of 6-2 in the high jump, which currently ranks second nationally.
Â
Up Next: The Bulldogs split up and head to the Tom Jones Memorial in Gainesville, Fla., and the Virginia Challenge in Charlottesville, Va., for meets this weekend.
