Georgia Sweeps Mississippi State in Season Finale

April 01, 2021 | Volleyball

STARKVILLE, Miss. – The 2020-21 volleyball season concluded Thursday afternoon when Georgia swept Mississippi State in straight sets (25-23, 25-23, 25-18) at Newell-Grissom Building.

After recording a new career best in kills Wednesday afternoon, sophomore Meghan Froemming topped that number in the finale with 11. She also tied a career-best seven digs in the match.

Defensively, Georgia (8-14) put up 12 total blocks. Sophomore Kacie Evans tied a career-best five blocks while four other Bulldogs assisted on four each. Georgia's 12 bocks ties for fifth-most all time in a three-set match in UGA volleyball rally scoring history.

Senior setter Brynn Chandler led the team with nine digs while handing out 20 assists.

At the service line, Georgia recorded six aces, three coming from Evans, tying a season best.

Down 9-6, Georgia went on an 8-2 run to take a 14-11 lead in set one. The teams went to the media timeout with Georgia ahead 15-13. Knotted at 15, Georgia opened a 6-1 run to take a 21-16 lead and force Mississippi State to take its final timeout. The Bulldogs drew set point at 24-19 then Mississippi State went on a 4-0 run to make it a one-point set. Senior Rachel Ritchie's third kill secured the first set win for Georgia, 25-23.

The set one win was Georgia's first opening set win of the spring.

Georgia took an early lead in the second set and held a four-point advantage going into the media timeout, 15-11. Back-to-back kills from junior Mallory Hernandez and Evans opened a five-point lead and prompted an MSU timeout, 19-14. Mississippi State (5-15) worked to whittle down the lead and tie the set at 20. Georgia was able to hold on to win the set by the same score, 25-23, and widen its lead in the match to 2-0.

Tied at six in the third set, Georgia won three of the next four points to take a 9-7 lead. Knotted again at nine, a 6-0 UGA scoring run put the Bulldogs ahead 15-9. A 5-2 MSU run cut the Bulldogs' lead to 17-14 but that would be the closest Mississippi State would get in the set. Georgia rolled to win the third set 25-18 and secure the first three-set sweep of the spring season.

Georgia concludes the season 8-14 in head coach Tom Black's fourth season.
