No. 14 Bulldogs Fall at No. 10 Gators
March 05, 2021 | Men's Tennis
GAINESVILLE, Fla. — The 10th-ranked Florida Gators captured a very competitive doubles point and then prevailed in all six singles matches, beating the Georgia men's tennis team 7-0 on Friday night at the Alfred A. Ring Tennis Complex.
"Florida played an outstanding match in front of a great crowd. Our guys fought a good fight but they were too good tonight," said Georgia head coach Manuel Diaz, whose squad was playing with a full roster for the first time in several weeks. "I am encouraged that we finally have everyone back healthy. We have a big challenge at South Carolina on Sunday. We need to keep pushing forward like Bulldawgs."
Florida (9-1, 5-0) and Georgia (6-3, 1-3 SEC) went back and forth in doubles. Bulldogs Trent Bryde and Tyler Zink took down Sam Riffice and Duarte Vale, 6-3, at the No. 1 position, and then, at No. 2, Florida's Johannes Ingildesen and Will Grant beat Billy Rowe and Blake Croyder, 7-5. That made the match at No. 3 the decider.
The No. 3 match between Bulldogs Philip Henning and Erik Grevelius and Florida's Ben Shelton and Andy Andrade was neck-and-neck from the start and was decided in a tiebreaker. Georgia's duo ran out to a 4-0 lead, only to see the Gators win the next seven points to capture the doubles point.
In singles, Florida got off to a strong start, winning the first set in all six matches. The Gators went up 2-0 with Shelton's 6-3, 6-2 victory over Croyder at No. 5, and then made it 3-0 with Blaise Bicknell's 6-0, 6-3 win over Rowe at the No. 4 spot. Florida clinched the win at No. 1 singles, where Vale defeated Bryde, 6-3, 6-2.
At No. 6 singles, Josh Goodger defeated Grevelius 6-2, 7-6 (7-1), while at No. 2, Riffice edged Zink, 7-6 (9-7), 6-4, in two tight sets. Florida closed out the singles weep at No. 3, where Andrade held off Henning, 7-5, 7-5.
The Bulldogs return to action Sunday when they visit No. 16 South Carolina. For more information on the Bulldogs, follow the team on Twitter (@UGATennis) and Instagram (@ugatennis).
