UNF Beats No. 5 Georgia 7-4

March 05, 2021 | Baseball

ATHENS -- Alex Kachler hit two home runs and Austin Bogart added a three-run shot to lead North Florida to a 7-4 win over fifth-ranked Georgia Friday at Foley Field.

Georgia (7-3) took a 2-0 lead in the first with five singles in the frame. Freshman Corey Collins extended his on-base streak to 10 games with a run-scoring single for the first run, and junior Shane Marshall put down a 2-out, bunt-single to make it 2-0. The Ospreys (4-6) answered in the top of the second when Bogart hit his first home run of the season to put them in front 3-2. Georgia's Riley King tied the game with an RBI-double in the bottom of the second but North Florida got a two-out, run-scoring single from Blake Marabell to reclaim a 4-3 advantage in the third. In the fifth, a solo home run from Kachler made it 5-3 Ospreys.

Bulldog freshman Will Pearson came on for freshman Luke Wagner who had started that inning in relief of senior starter C.J. Smith. The Bulldog senior dropped to 0-2 after allowing four runs on four hits with three walks and three strikeouts. Pearson provided a career-high three scoreless innings. UNF starter Max McKinley improved to 2-1, scattering four runs on 10 hits over 5.2 innings. Eddie Miller and Brandon Reitz combined to pitch 3.1 scoreless innings with Reitz collecting his second save.

The series continues Saturday with first pitch slated for 1:02 p.m., and it will be available on the Georgia Bulldog Sports Network and SEC Network+.

Postgame Comments From Georgia's Ike Cousins Head Coach Scott Stricklin
On the game…
"We just got outplayed, and I hate saying that. It crushes me to say that but we got outplayed today in just about every facet. We had a chance to expand the lead in the first inning. We're hitting the ball all over the yard and we get two runs, which again you feel pretty good about it, but we could have had a bigger inning, and we leave the bases loaded. Then, we had the bases loaded again and nobody out and don't score at all. Those are the big things, when you leave the guys on base, you leave opportunities on the bases and then you give them free bases with the walks. We walked five and I think hit two and that's just too much. You're not going to win when that happens."

On Will Pearson's performance tonight…
"Will did a good job. He gave us a chance to win and that's what we needed right there. Luke Wagner didn't have it today, it happens. Breaking ball, he just wasn't commanding it, he gives up the homerun and then the walk and a hit by pitch, we just had to get him out of there quick before the pitch count got up, so he's still available this weekend, he'll be fine, he'll bounce back. He's a tough kid. Will Pearson bailed us out, kept us right there, gave us three innings and gave us a chance to win. That's all you ask out of your bullpen guys and that's what he did."

Postgame Comments From The Bulldogs
Shane Marshall, C
On how frustrating it is when it feels like the team beats itself…
"It's the little mistakes. Free bases is a problem, it's always just something you have to cut down on as the year goes on but we have a young team and everyone is just trying to get into this. As the year goes on, everyone is just going to get better."

On having a catcher's perspective behind the plate tonight...
"I always try to say the same thing. But when it comes to the freshmen, I always try to just slow them down. Just have them take a deep breath in, breathe out, and pitch the way you've always pitched. It's nothing special. I mean it's a little bit special because it's a Georgia game, but you just have to keep doing what you know how to do. You're a pitcher. You came here for a reason. You just have to do what you know how to do."

On his performance in the fifth inning...
"I kind of knew it was a big spot. Going through my mind, I just knew I had to put it in there for a strike and let the defense play behind me."

On being a freshman and playing comfortably...
"I guess just throughout my life with baseball I've always pitched at the end of games. I've never been a starter, so being late in the game is kind of what I've always done. I always try to feel comfortable and not speed the game up."
