March 27, 2021 | Swimming & Diving
GREENSBORO, N.C. – For only the second time in program history, the University of Georgia men's swimming and diving team finished among the nation's top four squads, placing fourth Saturday evening at the 2021 NCAA Men's Swimming & Diving Championships at the Greensboro Aquatic Center.
Georgia finished the meet with 268 points, the second-highest total in program history, trailing only the 297 points tallied by the third-place 1997 team. With the placement, the Bulldogs became the only SEC program to finish in the top 10 at both the men's and women's championships. In the overall standings, Texas earned its 15th national championship with 595 points, followed by California in second at 568 and Florida in third at 367.
"We are extremely proud of what this team has accomplished," said Tom Cousins Swimming & Diving Head Coach Jack Bauerle. "Our guys were ready, and they fought hard every session for four days. It was a hard-fought battle and our goals from the beginning of the year were met. It is a great night for Georgia."
On the final night of competition, Georgia notched nine All-America citations, finishing the year with 34 overall. In the 1,650 freestyle, freshman Jake Magahey concluded his historic freshman season with a second-place finish, while senior Greg Reed (14:50.33) and freshman Tommy-Lee Camblong (14:51.36) earned Second Team honors. With an opening 1,000 freestyle split of 8:58.28, Camblong moved into 10th all-time in program history.
The terrific evening for Bulldog rookies continued in the 200 butterfly as Luca Urlando set a new school record with a fourth-place time of 1:39.75. Senior Camden Murphy also broke the previous top mark as he placed fifth with a personal-best time of 1:39.99. Fellow senior Javier Acevedo earned his fifth First Team citation of the meet with an eighth-place time of 1:41.80 in the 200 backstroke. In the 200 back B final, sophomore Ian Grum moved into second in program history with a second-place time of 1:40.01, missing out on the win by just one-hundredth of a second.
In other All-American performances, senior Jack Dalmolin placed 15th in the 200 breaststroke with a time of 1:54.12 and sophomore Dillon Downing finished 16th in the 100 freestyle at 43.09. In prelims, Downing set a new PR of 42.45, the third-fastest time in school history, while fellow sophomore Zach Hils remained seventh all-time with a personal-best 42.80. Downing and Hils would join Acevedo and Urlando in the closing 400 freestyle relay, finishing 17th with a time of 2:51.51, the fourth-fastest in program history.
With the conclusion of the 2020-21 season, Georgia will now turn its attention toward training for the upcoming Olympic Trials. The United State Trials will begin on June 4 at the CHI Health Center in Omaha, Nebraska.
