ATHENS, Ga. — The No. 13-ranked Georgia women's golf team posted a 7-over 295 in Friday's first round of the 49th Annual Liz Murphey Collegiate Classic on Friday, putting the Bulldogs tied for sixth place and eight shots off the lead.
"We feel like we're in great shape and didn't play our best round so we're excited for the weekend," head coach Josh Brewer said. "We know we have the firepower and the confidence on our home golf course. We just to clean a few things up and focus. That's been my one thing. That shot at that moment has to be the most important thing for those 10-15 seconds. They've got to understand that what it takes if we want to beat the best teams in the country."
All 10 golfers on the Georgia roster are competing in this weekend's tournament at the UGA Golf Course. The Bulldogs' "Black" team shot 307 on Friday and is in 17th place.
Georgia's top-five golfers surged late in the day, covering their final three holes at 6-under as a team.
"Hopefully, that momentum will carry over to us tomorrow," Brewer said. "We're in the hunt. We've just got to try to move up tomorrow and get ready for Sunday."
Jo Hua Hung and Isabella Holpfer carded Georgia's best rounds of the day. Hung shot 3-under 69 and is fourth individually. Holpfer, who is competing for the Black team, shot 2-under 70 is among seven golfers tied for fifth.
Georgia's counting rounds also featured a pair of 74s from Jenny Bae and Caterina Don and a 78, the score posted by both Céleste Dao and Caroline Craig. The Black squad's tally was rounded out by a 75 from Candice Mahé and a pair of 81s shot by Gabriela Coello, Alison Crenshaw and Zoé Walker.
Overall for Georgia, Bae and Don are tied for 26th; Mahé is tied for 39th; Craig and Dao are tied for 66th; and Coello, Crenshaw and Walker all are tied for 85th.
Hung was back and forth over her first several holes. She bogeyed No. 2, birdied No. 3 and double-bogeyed No. 4 before birdies at No. 6 and No. 7 put her at even at the midway point of her loop. After posting eight consecutive pars, Hung birdied No. 16, No. 17 and No. 18 to surge near the top of the leaderboard.
"On hole No. 4 I was kind of unlucky," Hung said. "My ball was stuck in the lip of the bunker. I couldn't hit the ball and ended up with a double. I remembered a quote from Dustin Johnson about even if you make a double bogey just move on and not let that result follow you . . . focus on your next shot. I think that helped me to get a lot of birdies after No. 4.
"The last three holes were really interesting," Hung added. "At No. 16, you can make birdie or double. For that hole, I told myself to just get my ball on the green. I did that but was far away from the hole. I just focused on the speed, and the ball went in. On 17 and 18, I put myself in good position to get birdie and that's what I did."
"Jo has been working hard and gaining confidence," Brewer said. "For her to come out and finish birdie, birdie, birdie to shoot 69 sort of tells you where she's at. We needed it."
Holpfer mixed six birdies with four bogeys to post her red number. She opened on No. 10 and was 3-under after birdies at No. 11, No. 13 and No. 14. Two of those shots were lost with bogeys at No. 15 and No. 16, but Holpfer bounced back to birdie No. 17 and No. 18. After the turn, she birdied No. 2 to move to 4-under through 11 holes, but bogeyed No. 3 and No. 8 en route to the clubhouse.
"I started on No. 10 and at No. 11 I hit a shot with a pitching wedge to within three feet," Holpfer said. "I think that gave me the confidence to go at the pins on shorter distances. On No. 13, I was actually aiming middle of the green. It went left but ended up about six feet from the pin. That ended up being a birdie. On 14, I made a really long birdie putt. It just kept going like that. It was fun. With birdies, you make some and just want more."
No. 4 LSU shot even-par 288 to grab the first-round lead, largely due to a tournament-record 8-under 64 from Ingrid Lindblad. That loop bettered the previous low round in LMCC history of 7-under 65 by Alabama's Lauren Stephenson in 2018.
Rounding out the top-10 teams No. 16 Arkansas at 290, No. 10 Southern Cal at 292, No. 1 South Carolina at 293, No. 6 Ole Miss at 294, the Bulldogs, No. 12 Auburn and Louisville all at 295 and No. 19 Alabama and No. 22 Florida both at 296.
Tee times for Saturday will begin at 8:30, with three teams teeing off in waves from No. 1 and No. 10. Georgia will be paired with South Carolina and Ole Miss and will tee off from No. 1 from 9:25-10:05. The Black team will play with Kentucky and Texas A&M, opening play at No. 10 between 10:10-10:50. Live scoring is available via golfstat.com. Attendance is free and unlimited for the tournament with several measures in place due to COVID-19 listed here.
